In Memorium
To his wife of 55 years, eight children, 16 grandchildren and generations of friends, he was a beloved man. An impressive presence and gregarious personality, Jim Casey's leadership emerged in many arenas: army infantry in WWII, Catholic Church activities, alumni associations for both his alma maters and community organizations. Closest to his heart, however, was his large and spiritual family.
A resident of Garden City and Greenport, N.Y., Mr. Casey died of cancer on August 18th in his Greenport home at the age of 80.
Born in Brooklyn, he was the son of Irish immigrant parents from County Clare. Mtr. Casey earned an academic scholarship to Brooklyn Prep, beginning a lifelong association with the Society of Jesus, whose priests were its teachers and administrators. He later repaid his debt to the Jesuits by becoming president of the school's alumni association and leading efforts that raised over $2 million in grants to students at Jesuit high schools, even though Brooklyn Prep closed its doors in 1972.
Following graduation in 1943, Mr. Casey joined the army, was promoted to the rank of sergeant during training, and deployed to France where briefly, at age 18, he was charged with leading a platoon when two officers commanding the unit became casualties. Soon afterward, he was twice wounded and returned stateside to recuperate.
He graduated from St. John's University in 1948 and married Joan McGeever of Flushing in 1951. They became the parents of four daughters and four sons.
Mr. Casey had a successful career in corporate technology sales for companies including NCR, Burroughs, Friden and Singer before founding his own company in 1975. For 20 years he served as president of Diversified Electronics, a computer software firm based in Mineola.
A Garden City resident since 1965, Mr. Casey was a daily communicant and lector at St. Joseph's and St. Anne's Catholic churches. He was a lifelong participant in civic and community activities, from coaching Little League teams in younger days to volunteering at Rotacare, a medical service for the indigent, and The Inn, a housing facility for the homeless in Hempstead. He was also past president of the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick Brooklyn, and past president of the St. John's University Business School Alumni Association.
In addition to his wife, he leaves his children, James of Maryland, Marianne of Ohio, John and Eileen of Long Island, and Patricia, Kenneth, Robert and Jeanne of Massachusetts.
Visiting was at the Fairchild Chapel in Garden City on August 20th and 21st. A Mass of Christian Burial was said at St. Anne's Church on August 22nd. Interment was private. In lieu of flowers, donations to Rotacare, 1220 Front St., Uniondale, NY 11553, would be appreciated. Arrangements were handled by Fairchild Sons.
