What's Up For Young Adults
Almost 100 young adults were invited to the "Back to School Bash" held at the Garden City Public Library Wednesday night, August 30th. These tweens and teens earned the right to attend this fun-filled event by reading and reporting on what they read over the summer. The night offered prizes, certificates, food, games and music for an hour and a half. It was the perfect way to reacquaint with classmates after a summer break. A big thank you to the Friends of the Garden City Public Library for making this night possible.
On Tuesday morning, September 5th, when the library opens at 9:30 AM, registration will begin for two Young Adult programs to be held in September. The Babysitting Workshop which is offered every Fall and Spring for students in 6-12th grades will be given in two parts on consecutive Wednesday afternoons, September 27th and October 4th at 3:45PM. Sign up early as this program fills up quickly. You will need to bring a doll to the September 27th session to practice diapering and handling a small child.
Also, registration begins that morning for "Decorate Your Denim" workshop. At this workshop which is led by Janine Bendicksen each participant will bring a pair of blue jeans and will be guided through decorating them with fabric paints and beads. Give your jeans-old or new- a makeover. Two sessions are being offered on September 16th. The first begins at 1 PM, the second at 3 PM, each running 90 minutes. Each session is limited to 15 registrants. Priority is given to Garden City Library cardholders.
Registration for all Young Adult programs can be done in person at the Young Adult desk, by phoning 742-8405 ext. 220, or emailing mkelly@nassaulibrary.org. If signing up electronically please include name, address, phone number and grade in the message and indicate which program you are interested in.

FROM LIBRARY'S ADMINISTRATION
Lunch Bag Book Talk
Reference librarians Mrs. Flanagan and Mrs. Byrne are pleased to be kicking off the Fall season with another popular LunchBag BookTalk on Tuesday, September 12th from 12:00 to 2:00PM . Property by Valerie Martin has been selected. Property is set in the surreal heat of the antebellum South during a slave rebellion. Property takes the form of a dramatic monologue, bringing to the page a voice rarely heard in American fiction: the voice of a woman slave holder. It is riveting fiction, fast, richly plotted, shimmering with visual detail. It is also an invitation to re-examine the traditions of the Southern novel and the myth of the chivalrous South, and a haunting meditation on what Valerie Martin has called "the fantastic and constant perversity of the oppressor to feel victimized by the oppressed." Registration begins Monday August 21st. Registration is limited to Garden City Residents and must done in person. . Remember to bring your lunch and we will supply the drinks and desserts. For further information contact Laura Flanagan at The Garden City Public Library 742-8405.
