Preparing to march in the Memorial Day parade Though school was out for the summer, Cub Scout Pack 7 stayed busy. The boys helped kick off the "traditional" start of summer by marching in the Memorial Day Parade. It is always an privilege to walk in the parade and honor those that have given their life in the service of our country, especially since Pack 7 is chartered by the American Legion's William Bradford Turner's Post in Garden City.

On July 1st the pack attended a Brooklyn Cyclones baseball game in Coney Island. The game was great, but I doubt anyone can recall the score because the highlight was that after the game we got to pitch our tents and sleep overnight on the field! While a movie played on the scoreboard scouts played tag, had a catch and ran the bases and then slept under the stars on some of the most luxurious grass we've ever experienced, all within a homerun ball's distance from the boardwalk, Nathan's, the Cyclone roller coaster, and the giant Ferris Wheel. What a night!

Next up was Webelos Resident Camp where scouts Zachary Miner, Jon Toto, James Amato, Christopher Stumpf, and Eric Gartner, slept in tents for 3 nights and spent 4 great days fishing, swimming in the water hole, taking aim at the archery and BB gun ranges, learning to cook over a campfire, eating ice cream, watching movies, getting dirty, making friends and having fun. They all came home with great memories.

It's amazing how much fun kids can have together when they don't have an x-box or a gameboy to distract them.

This past Saturday evening we went fishing out of Point Lookout. A great time was had by all as the scouts reeled in sea bass, porgies, fluke, sea robins, and even a bluefish. The water was absolutely beautiful as the sun began to set and we headed home with our catch.

Labor Day weekend will bring yet another trip. This time we will be sleeping on a real live Battleship - the Battleship New Jersey, and will be able to explore the ship and sleep in the crew's bunks, just like the real sailors in the Navy do.

Boys in the first through fifth grades should feel free to stop by and see what all the excitement is about. You can also call the Theodore Roosevelt Council and speak to Corey Charest at 797-7600 to learn more about scouting, and the many Cub Packs and Boy Scout troops in the Garden City area.
