GC Girls Finish At The Top
Gabrielle Barcklow and Nicole Sheridan of Garden City were among the top finishers in the Second Annual Jones Beach Junior Lifeguard Tournament hosted by the Jones Beach Lifeguard Corps. Gabrielle, age 11 placed 3rd in the Run- Swim-Run event and the Co-Ed Swim Relay in the Girls (9-11) C Division. Nicole Sheridan, age 16, placed 1st in both the Rescue Race and the Swim Relay, 2nd in the Co-Ed Swim Relay, and 3rd in the Distance Swim in the Girls (16-17) AA Division. During rigorous weekend training, Gabrielle and Nicole learned critical skills that will help them be better lifeguards in the future. The competition reflects skills used by lifeguards working the ocean, and includes swimming, running, and rescues relays. In addition to building lifesaving skills, the Junior Lifeguard program instills an understanding of the beach environment and its changing conditions. This is the third year that FPL Energy has sponsored the Jones Beach Junior Lifeguard Program.
Alumni Reunite
For A Great
Cause
Women's Lacrosse has played a central role in Garden City High School's sports history. On August 26 several former players will reunite for an alumni game to support Jackie Fiore (the 2003 graduate and recipient of the Patricia Sandford Award for Outstanding Player) who was diagnosed with Acute Myelogenous Leukemia in June.
Jackie has a very long journey ahead of h-er. She will be taking a leave from Boston College this semester because her treatment involves lengthy hospital stays. Her first round in the hospital lasted twenty-eight days and she is now recovering from her second round with two more to follow over the course of the fall. Jackie plans on beating this aggressive disease. If she learned one thing from Garden City Lacrosse it is that winning is a habit that will not go away and she has carried that attitude into her battle with leukemia.
The game will take place on Saturday, August 26 from 4:30-5:30 p.m. at Garden City High School with a celebration following the game at Leo's from 7-9 p.m. Leo's will be charging $20 per person for food and drinks but this does not include donation money (minimum donations of $20 for Jackie are requested). The Garden City Men's Association has donated t-shirts for the event. The event is open to anyone and everyone who would like to show their support for Jackie. If you would like to play in the game to just show your support at the post game celebration please contact Jackie's former captain and teammate Kerry McCaffrey ( KerryAMcCaffrey@yahoocom cell: 516 987-1252 home 741-4925). If you cannot attend but would like to make a donation to Jackie, please send it to 82 Wyatt Road, Garden City, NY 11530. Jackie would love to see all her friends and supporters before she goes back into the hospital on August 28.
