adult art classes at Cluett hall

Due to popular demand, the Recreation Department will again offer an adult pastel class taught by Arleen Ruth Urban. This class is open to adult residents of the Inc. Village of Garden City. The class will run from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. on Fridays beginning September 8 th. The classes will be held in Cluett Hall at St. Paul's. The cost of the 10 week program will be $105.

This ten week program will teach the beginner as well as advanced student the art of painting portraits and landscapes/still-life in pastels from photographs. Students will be given the option of dividing each three hour session between portrait or landscape, or they may concentrate solely on the subject of their choice.

Demonstrations will be available as needed throughout the program. Each student will receive the individual attention required to work at their own pace and level of expertise.

Arleen Ruth Urban, the instructor for this program, is a signature member of the Pastel Society of America. A winner of numerous awards, her commissioned portraits hang in the many Garden City homes.

lessons offered

The Recreation Department offers adult tennis lessons in ten week sessions.Our lessons are open to all adults who are residents of the Inc. Village of Garden City and are offered at various times during the day and on the weekends.

If you are interested in lessons for the upcoming fall season which begins the week of September 25 th, please visit the Recreation Office in Village Hall to fill out an interest form no later than September 19 th. Classes will be put together according to ability and day desired on a first come, first serve basis. You will be contacted by our tennis pro, Carrie Strum, to confirm your class.

The cost of this 10 week, one hour program will be $199. Payment must accompany this interest form. Please make checks payable to "Inc. Village of Garden City".

The Recreation Department is also offering an Adult Ultimate Tennis workout. This 1 1/2 hr. workout is for the experienced tennis player who wants to hone their skill. It is held on Saturdays from 10-11:30 a.m. This program will be offered in 10 week sessions with a start date of September 30. The cost of the session is $200. To register for this program, please visit the Recreation Office in Village Hall.

Senior Exercise Class

Beginning 10 am, Monday, September 11, the Senior Exercise Class, an offering of SAIL, will meet in the gym at the Lutheran Church on 420 Stewart Avenue, Garden City. Classes are available three times a week, on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 10 am to 11 am. These co-educational classes offer safe and effective stretching, strengthening and gentle aerobic exercises designed for the older adult. All seniors are welcome and pre-registration is not necessary. Wear loose, comfortable clothing and sneakers. If you have hand weights (2-3-lbs), bring them to class. There is a suggested contribution of $3 per class. All seniors are welcome!!

Summer Close Out: Pizza!

The last of summer's pizza parties sponsored by the Garden City Retired Men's Club is coming up on Thursday, August 31 at the Recreation Center on Golf Club Lane.

Again the pies will be supplied by Valentino's of Garden City Park. And the generous slices will come with a host of different toppings and a bottomless glass. All this and Lucky Bucks for only $5.00. All Garden City men are welcome to take advantage of this offer and to stick around after the pie and palaver for some cards, bocce and shuffleboard.
