Busy Day For Firefighters
On Wednesday, June 14th, Garden City firefighters were called into action for two major incidents. First, in the morning hours, Garden City's Bravest sent a mutual aid Engine Company to the scene of a home explosion on Ribbon Street in Franklin Square. The Franklin Square blaze leveled one home and caused damage to several other nearby residences. Under the direction of Fire Chief John P. Casey, and Assistant Fire Chiefs Meehan, Graham and Cavarra, a team of firefighters, including, Captain John Hadden, Ex-Capt. Ed Tacchi, FF's James O'Keefe, Kurt Konrad, Joseph Nadolny, Brady Wehrum, John Hester, Bobby Horvath, and Vincent DeJoseph assisted the Franklin Square & Munson Fire Department in their operation. Garden City firefighters operated for several hours before being released from the scene.
In the late night overnight hours of Wednesday night into Thursday morning, at approximately 1:45 am, Garden City firefighters fought a blaze at 829 Franklin Ave at the Rouge Restaurant. Over 40 Garden City firefighters battled the blaze which burned in the basement and the main floor areas of the restaurant. Additional mutual aid companies from area departments were called in as well to assist. According to incident commander Assistant Fire Chief James Meehan, "an aggressive interior attack by Garden City firefighters helped minimize damage to the building." He also noted that "the automatic fire alarm activated and helped alert us early about the fire, which also helped in minimizing building damage." One firefighter suffered an injury at the scene and was transported to Winthrop Hospital for evaluation. The firefighter was treated and released that evening. The cause of the blaze is being investigated by the Nassau County Fire Marshal's Office.
