Trojans In County Baseball Finals
The Varsity Baseball Team advanced to the Class A Nassau County Finals and will play Levittown Division in a best of three series.
After defeating Clarke and Seaford in the first two rounds of the tournament, they defeated Valley Stream North in the third round. Clarke handed The Trojans their first tournament loss in a semi-final game. The loss forced The Trojans to face Clarke again in an elimination game.
GC - 8V.S.North - 7
GC took a 3-1 lead after one inning. Tom D'Antonio walked to open the inning and scored on a double by Matt Petiton. Brian Kiernan followed with a 2-run home run.
The Trojans trailed 7-3 after two innings as North scored four times.
Rob Finneran hit a 2-run homer and Matt Mahoney added a solo home run to close the gap to 7-6 in the 6th inning.
Petiton doubled with one out in the bottom of the 7 th inning. Matt Emmert's 2 out single scored Petiton to tie the score and force extra innings.
Rob Finneran singled to open the 8 th inning and eventually scored on D'Antonio's game winning base hit.
Junior Ryan Maloney kept The Trojans in the game, pitching four innings in relief, giving up two runs. Rob Finneran got the win pitching the last two innings, striking out three of the six batters he faced.
GC - 1Clarke - 3
The Trojans took a 1-0 lead into the 7 th inning. Clarke scored 3 times on a 3-run home run.
Matt Petiton scattered 3 hits and shut the Rams down for 6 innings before they scored.
GC - 6 Clarke - 2
The Trojans eliminated the Rams and earned a trip to the County Finals with this win. Joe Cesarini (8-0) scattered five hits with 5 k's. He gave up his first earned run of the season as he improved his career pitching record to 19-0.
With 2 outs in the bottom of the 6 th inning and The Trojans trailing 2-1, Brian Finneran doubled. His brother Rob singled, scoring Brian with the tieing run.
Joe DiMasso opened the bottom of the 7 th inning, reaching base on an error. Tom D'Antonio singled and Joe Cesarini's sacrifice bunt moved the runners over. Matt Petiton was intentionally walked to load the bases. Brian Kiernan's grand slam home run won it for The Trojans. Kiernan has three play-off home runs (two of them were game-winning grand slams).
