Water Authority Scam

Nassau County Police Commissioner James H. Lawrence would like to warn residents about a current 'Water Authority' scam occurring in Nassau County.

"The Water Authority of Western Nassau County has had several calls from customers wanting to confirm that the water authority had called them to schedule an appointment to visit their house, when in fact, they did not," said Commissioner Lawrence.

The caller on some of the calls, told the customer they wanted to come over to test the water. Some of the most recent callers have told the customer they want to come over to 'remove their meter and put it outside of the house.'

"Residents who receive one of these calls, should not give out any information and should hang up the phone immediately," said Commissioner Lawrence. "In addition, reports seem to indicate that these calls are targeting elderly customers."

Residents should be reminded to always check ID before letting anyone into their house and more importantly to call the police if the situation does not appear safe or legitimate."

The Water Authority of Western Nassau County serves parts of western Garden City.
