Blizzards Trap Wolverines
Kristina Kelly sends the ball up the field.
On Sunday, April 30th, the Garden City Blizzards hosted he Hauppauge Wolverines at St. Paul's It was the first time the teams had competed. This led to some uncertainty as neither team knew what to expect. A few minutes into the match, it was apparent that the teams were evenly skilled and a great soccer game had begun.
With a stiff wind at their backs in the first half, the Blizzards put immediate pressure on the Wolverines. The Wolverines couldn't get the ball out of their defensive zone due to a determined and quicker Blizzard team. The Blizzards kept playing the ball into their offensive 18 yard box, leading to some great scoring attempts by the forwards. For 35 minutes, the team dominated every aspect of the match, but couldn't hit the back of the net and the score was 0-0 at the half.
As the second half began, the match became more evenly played. Both teams went forward to goal, each team's defense played well. Throughout the half, the middle third of the field staged some tenuous battles for possession; the Blizzards winning the majority. Although our opponent defended their goal well, at 15 minutes into the half the Blizzards finally broke through for a goal. Erin Dean and Victoria Aldrich worked the ball into the penalty area. Colleen Mullin stayed to the far post as the Wolverines defense concentrated on Victoria and Erin. A nifty pass from Erin got to Colleen who blasted the game winning goal into the upper left hand corner of the net. It was deserving goal as the team displayed a tremendous effort for 70 minutes. For the next 20 minutes, the match was left in the hands of the stubborn Blizzard's defense which rose to the occasion and recorded their first shut out of the year.
Brigid O'Malley, Delsey Attardi, Amanda Murolo and Catherine Dorn playing great team defense.
