Freedom Girls Win PlayersOnly Weekend

2006-05-04 / Sports

The girls played a strong and physical team from North Shore Power on April 29th winning 1-0. Despite only having a single substitute due to illness and injuries, the players showed very good teamwork and communication. The early stages of the game were dominated by Freedom's mid-field with a series of probing runs and passes. The pressure paid off with a long throw in from Kristiana Pelizzoli that released Shana Maglio. Shana beat two defenders and placed a beautiful rising shot over the North Shore goalkeeper for the opening goal from 25 yards out.

While North Shore continued to substitute the six girls on their sideline, the girls from Garden City continued to contain their offense. Marina McKeown, Katherine Kiely, Zo Zeno and Courtney Murphy all played a great defense thwarting all attempts by clearing to the sidelines and backing each other up. Jessica Gunther made all the important saves keeping yet another clean sheet. Olivia Donachie, Courtney Basel, Kristen Steinhardt and Lauren Wierzel provided many of the chances and, along with the forwards and midfielders created a great deal of frustration to the North Shore girls. Kristiana Pelizzoli, Marguerite Rix and Shana Maglio also managed to provide the threat of counter attack that kept the opposing team on their toes.

Free kicks and corners by Kristiana Pelizzoli almost lead to 2 other goals while Kristen Steinhardt provided some brilliant play to almost score in the second half. Marguerite Rix also broke free and was stopped only by being fouled (not called) inside the penalty area.

The girls still kept their composure despite playing through some injuries to Olivia Donachie, Katherine Kiely, Courtney Murphy, Marguerite Rix and Courtney Basel. The opposing team showed little in the way of sportsmanship given their comments both on and off the field and the disregard for the Player's Only Weekend mandate of no coaching.

It does require notice that the defense has provided a critical boost for the Freedom team and special thanks must go out to the girls who selflessly play these positions.
