Luke Zeccola scored a tremendous goal from outside the box; Danny Simmons congratulates him. The U-10 Boys Scorpions have won their first 4 games! They were victorious again on Saturday, April 29th, defeating Valley Stream by a score of 3-1 in Valley Stream.

Highlight of the game: Coach LARRY ZAROU Got A YELLOW CARD!! That's right, the always-calm, genteel, professional Larry Zarou, pillar of the Centennial Soccer community, was shown the "'Ole Yella"! Larry Zarou, who was voted "Least-Likely-to-Get-a-Yellow-Card" in the Centennial Coaches' Year-Book, got a Yellow Card! (Explanation: When a referee deems the conduct and/or words of a player or coach "unsportsman-like", he flashes a yellow card at that person as a warning.) Well, Larry had the audacity to question a call that he didn't see and needed repeated. Politely, Larry said, "Excuse me, Ref, I'm sorry, I didn't catch that call. Would you please tell me what it was?" And then, FLASH! Bright yellow in Larry's face! O.K., enough of "roasting" Larry . . . ! Back to the game.

Taylor Ricci was shot out of a cannon and immediately took the ball away from the Valley Stream striker, volleyed with Danny Simmons and Luke Zeccola, and then shot hard at the goal; great save by Valley Stream goalie.

Brian Bingham gets ready to pass to his other Scorpion attackers, as Valley Stream defenders close in.
Brian Bingham gets ready to pass to his other Scorpion attackers, as Valley Stream defenders close in. Derek Attardi and Dale Stasco did a great job of keeping the ball up, and Brian Bingham, Michael Catalano, Ryan Zarou and Drew Kiley all worked together to hault any Valley Stream attack. Goalie Robert Wotczak saved several very hard-booted shots (ouch!) Then, Luke Zeccola received a pass from Danny Simmons, and, from outside the box, Luke nailed it - over the goalie's head into the back of the net! SCORE!

Michael Catalano showed some quick thinking and fast defensive action as he interrupted the Valley Stream striker's shot at our goal, very likely saving the goal. Score at the Half: GC, 1-0.

Robert Wotczak, Taylor Ricci and Drew Kiley began an aggressive attack, but Valley Stream got the ball and put the pressure on. GC Defenders Ryan Zarou, Derek Attardi, Dale Stasco, and Michael Catalano and GC goalie Luke Zeccola had their work cut out for them, but they delivered, stopping every Valley Stream drive.

Taylor Ricci's speed and agility are no match for this opponent!
Taylor Ricci's speed and agility are no match for this opponent! The offense of Brian Bingham, Taylor Ricci, and Danny Simmons charged downfield, passing from Bingham to Simmons to Ricci and back to Simmons; Danny set up, shot, and SCORED! 2-0, GC.

Then, a goalie nightmare: Valley Stream was awarded a penalty kick inside the box; they scored. 2-1, GC.

Derek Attardi got the ball and took it downfield and passed to Danny Simmons, who made an exciting breakaway. Everyone held their breath as Danny shot, and . . . BONK!! The ball hit the top of the goal frame and bounced back. Danny got the ball back and crossed to Robert Wotczak, who was ready in perfect position in front of the goal. Robert sliced it in for the 3rd GC goal of the game. Final score: GC, 3; Valley Stream, 1; Coach Larry Zarou, 1 YELLOW CARD!! (We love ya, Larry!)
