Girl Scout Troop 1543 AtThe Bird Sanctuary
Girl Scout Troop 1543 goes to work at the Bird Sanctuary.
Troop Leader Pat Spencer was stuck. Her planned girl scout troop meeting at Hemlock got cancelled and she needed an alternate site. Things worked out well, and Girl Scout Troop 1543 arranged a visit with Rob Alvey at the Garden City Bird Sanctuary on Monday May1. The flowers were in full bloom, and the newly dedicated butterfly garden had additional room for a flat of marigolds, compliments of the troop. Rob showed them bird nests, helped them fill the feeders, and showed the meadow, a remnant of the Hempstead Plains. He asked them to be on the lookout for the May 7 Newsday, as Bryn Nelson, the science writer, is mentioning the volunteer work at the Nassau County Storm Water Basin now known at the Garden City Bird Sanctuary. Leaders Pat Spencer and Carolyn Bunn were delighted, and offered to help sketches of the site as needed. The scouts were given magnets and maps of the site. The Bird sanctuary is open Sundays, 1-5 and by appointment. Participants included Pat Spencer, Carolyn Bunn, Alexis Arena, Catherine Bunn, Lindsay Galligan, Meaghan Kiely, Caitlin Mahland, Christina Server, and Ally Sweeny.
