The FIRE started off the season on a strong note with a double header sweep against the Island Garden Lightning. Drew Simone pitched the FIRE to victory in game #1 and excellent offensive output from Darryl Tan, Nick Cento, Joe Gulmi, Sean Kiley and strong defense by Alex Passaretti. Kyle Richie came on in relief and shut the Lightning down for an 11-4 victory.
The FIRE jumped out to a quick lead in game #2 behind the hot hitting of Andrew Connors, Richard D'Angelo and Brian Mitchell but the big offensive blast came from a huge 2 out bases loaded double off the bat of Brian Emmert. But the offensive outburst was not the big story of the game. The real story of the day was the pitching of Kenny Ritchie. With the game comfortably in hand the focus turned to Kenny Ritchie as he retired batter after batter. Going into the final inning he had allowed only 1 base runner and not a single hit. Fans and players cheered on as Kenny as turned it up a notch and closed out the Lightning in the 14-0 win for his first career no hitter.
