The rains came this past weekend and it was a good thing as we were getting quite dry and that means our trees, flowers and lawns were suffering. It was also nice that the rains came on the Arbor Day weekend as though Mother Nature wanted to make up for being remiss and to also mark her special holiday - Arbor Day. Enjoy the effects of that rain with all the beautiful blooms opening all over town. What forethought - giving us the name Garden City.
In keeping with the theme of gardens, I came across this: "Kind hearts are the garden, kind thoughts are the roots, kind words are the blossom and kind deeds are the fruit." The author is unknown but the message is true.
In last week's paper we learned of the passing of Pam Morano. She was a hard worker in this town for many years and the best thing about her was that she was willing to give everyone their due, listen to their ideas, rebut when she thought it was right, and you always knew where she stood. Her service on the G.C. School Board and in all other aspects of this town she was a well-informed voice filled with reason. Our prayers are with her husband Tony, her children, and her family and they should know that we will miss her also.
The Garden City Casino held their monthly Ladies Luncheon/Bridge recently and it was nice to see more and more of our Show Birds back in town and back to their lives in town. Enjoying the afternoon were: Ellie Singer, Claire Burns, Dorothy Hedwig, Betty McCarthy, Sue Hall, and Barbara Nothel . It was a great day for all - winners or not.
The folks at the Cherry Valley Club held their Dinner/Bridge last week and they had 26 tables in play following a delicious Buffet Dinner. The first Small Slam of the evening was dealt, bid and made by Norma Spencer and Kay Tommey . A Grand Slam was also made that evening by Trudy Anderson and Win Eustice . The evening's door prizes were won by Marge and Les Schnell with the other going to Judy Riedell . Enjoying the evening also were Kris and Frank Harder, Marie Scott, Marilyn O'Brien, Anita and Joe Frey , and Jackie West among many others. The next Dinner/Bridge will be held on Wednesday, May 17 th and according to Chairman George Rivara , that will be the final one till Fall.
The very next day on April 20 was the ladies Luncheon/Bridge at the Garden City Country Club. There were 33 tables in play after Lunch and the first Small Slam went to Kitty Rubino and Dorothy Jennings , in Six No Trump. No Trump seemed to be in fashion that day as Grace Basile and Dian Kendrick brought a Grand Slam in with Seven No Trump. Pat Sheehan was the happy winner of the Door Prize. Bridge Chairlady Muriel Urban announced that the next bridge would be held on Thursday, May 18 th and to be sure to make your reservations.
As the song goes - May is full of promises and Ada Kane is looking forward to that month as she not only celebrates her birthday on the 1 st of May, but she and Ed celebrate their wedding anniversary during the first week of May. May they have a happy week doing their celebrating and they have all good wishes for many more years full of health and happiness.
Michele Dyerland spent one of the lovely almost summer days recently putting in her annuals in her front garden. She is also busy getting ready for her daughter's wedding. Carol Efthimiou is another lady getting ready for a wedding but it is her son's wedding. While mothers of the Bride always seem to have more to do, mothers of the Groom also have a lot to do. Either way, these two ladies are more than up to the task and we are sure both weddings will be just beautiful.
Folks who enjoy flea markets have something to look forward to on Saturday, June 3 rd so do mark your calendar. The G.C. Historical Society will be holding one on that day from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. If you have any items that you would like to donate call Sally Schreier at 741-5167. If you wish to rent space and sell your own things call Kris Harder at 747-1774. The flea market will be held on the grounds of the Historical Society House on Eleventh Street. All in all, a great idea for a fund-raiser in a win/win situation for all.
Not let's sit back and smell those May flowers and I'll see you next week.
