The community is invited to attend a dedication of newly donated memorial trees and shrubs at the Garden City Bird Sanctuary on Sunday, April 23. The informal service, officiated by Ian Rottenberg of the Garden City Community Church, begins at 2 PM. Light refreshments will be served. In addition to the plantings, a new trellis has been installed to honor John (Jay) Poetreeman Johnson, an arborist, poet and performance artist who died in a work accident last December. Jay was a member of the Long Island Arboricultural Association and appeared at the Garden City Bird Sanctuary's 10th Anniversary Festival last May, performing with his "3 Amigos" a musical chain saw performance piece. Additional plantings were made to honor the memory of several friends of the Bird Sanctuary including William Heston, husband of Director Marye Heston. Along with the dedication, the 2006 Garden City Bird Sanctuary Environmental Stewardship Award will be presented to Steve Corbett for his tireless dedication to development of the Floral Park Centennial Gardens and Bird Sanctuary. The entrance to the Bird Sanctuary is opposite 181 Tanners Pond Road.
