In Memoriam John B. Amrod
John B. Amrod, a highly regarded Garden City lawyer who fought several high-profile cases, died on March 27, 2006 after a lengthy illness. He was 75 years old.
He was born in Saugerties, the last of eleven children. He graduated with honors from Saugerties High School, received a Bachelor of Arts from St. Joseph's Seminary, did postgraduate studies at Georgetown University School of Foreign Service, served in the United States Army then graduated from St. John's University School of Law with honors.
He was a resident of Garden City for 43 years. Mr. Amrod and his wife Frances resided on Sixth Street in Garden City for eighteen years. They enjoyed spending weekends at their Southhold vacation home with family and friends. In 2003, they moved to Babylon.
During his 44 years of practicing law, he served as Deputy Village Attorney for Garden City. In his private practice, he handled hundreds of estate and trusts and handled dozens of litigated matters in surrogate's Courts throughout the State. He served on the editorial staff of Mertens, Law of Federal Gift and Estate Taxation, authoring several chapters. Mr. Amrod also lectured for the New York State Bar Association, the Nassau Academy of Law, The Nassau County Bar Association and the National Business Institute. He was a New York State Bar Association member and Delegate to the House of Delegates, former Director and member of the Estate and Trusts Law Committee of the Nassau County Bar Association and Past President and Director of the Tax and Estate Planning Council of Long Island.
Mr. Amrod volunteered many hours of service to the Volunteers Lawyers Project of Long Island, helping many people in need.
Amrod is survived by his wife of 32 years, Frances, son Marlon and daughters Tania and Natasha as well as his step-children, Harold, Katie and Marion, nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother, Dr. Paul Amrod, sister Elizabeth Bell both of Florida and may nieces and nephews.
Mr. Amrod will repose at Fairchild and Sons Funeral Home in Garden City on Friday, March 31, 2006, visiting from 3-5 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. A funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, April 1, 2006 at St. Joseph's Church in Garden City at 10 a.m. Internment will follow at Holy Rood Cemetery in Westbury.
