Garden City Knights Win 10 Out Of 11 Games

2006-03-24 / Sports

The 5th grade boys Garden City Knights basketball team won 10 of their 11 last eleven games to end their Island Garden season 12-7 and qualify for the playoffs. On Sat March 18th the team beat St. Rose and on Sat March 19th, the team was victorious in a contest against JCC Slutsky. The one loss in the last two months came at the hands of Syosset Gaber, a longtime rival in a 4 point defeat. In both the 3/18 and 3/19 games, all of the Knights players scored during the game. The Knights continue to play aggressivedefense and implement a motion offense as they competein the tough Island Garden Super League against teams from all over the NY metro area. Brian "back door cut" Badgett and Kyle "kick it up a notch" Ritchie make it difficult for the other team keep up with our fast break offense. Drew "dominator" Gallagher and Michael "mean machine" Walsh provide a formidable inside scoring presence. Sean "sweet" Walsh continues to throw sugary passes that melt in your hands while Mike "money" Perrotta frequents the cash register at the bottom of the net. Rob "rebound" Vani and Andrew "box out"" Granville control the inside boards using their bodies to prevent second scoring opportunities for the other team while Eddie "bounce pass" Blatz and Jack 'jam it inside" O'Brien fire assists through the lane with pinpoint precision. Stephen "strong man" Ollquist and Austin "benjamin moore" Stoner create offensive rebounds and put back opportunities in the Island Garden paint often characterized as a circus given the physical nature of play and lack of fouls called. The team has improved significantly over the course of the season through hard work, frequent practices and team commitment.

The team is coached by Tom "two tones of encouragement, loud and louder" Granville, John "jumping, jelly bean, play defense!" Walsh and Tom "terminator" Ollquist. Playoffs start March 25th.
