Middle School Competes In Math Competition
Nelson Adams This year, for the first time, the Garden City Middle School participated in the American Mathematics Competition (AMC 8). The high school has participated in the AMC 10 and AMC 12 for several years.
Based on recommendations of mathematics teachers, twenty 8 th graders, twenty 7 th graders, and ten 6 th graders were chosen to compete. The contest was held on Tuesday, November 15 in the school cafeteria during periods one and two. The 40-minute contest consisted of 25 challenging multiple-choice questions. Award certificates were presented to the top scorers from each grade. According to the Mathematical Association of America, the contest's "real rewards come from challenging each student with mathematics that is new, different and 'outside the box'."
The following students were the top scorers in the American Mathematics Competition. Scores were out of 25.

Jan Gong (7 th grade) was the school winner with an outstanding score 21 out of a possible 25. Jan, along with Yohei Yamauchi (7 th grade) and james Sheridan (8 th grade), who had scores of 16 each, gave GCMS a team score of 53, which earned the school a certificate of merit.
