High School Announces Valedictorian/Salutatorian

At the March 20th Board of Education Meeting, Hank Hardy, High School Principal, announced that Thomas D'Antonio has been selected to be the Valedictorian and Michaela Pewarski the Salutatorian for the Class of 2006.
Thomas and Michaela are high performing students with extraordinary academic scores. Thomas has a GPA that is approximately 100.8 weighted. He achieved a 2190 on the SAT's. Michaela's GPA is 100.02 weighted, with a SAT score of 2260.
Thomas is a 2005 National Merit Semifinalist, a member of the National Honor Society and is on the Principal's list. He has received numerous prestigious awards such as: The George Washington School of Engineering Medal for outstanding achievement in science and math, the Math Association Award, the William Bohlin Award for most promising math student in Garden City High School, the National Latin Exam-gold medal for level I,II,III, and the Certamen Award - first place on Long Island for Latin Quiz Bowl.
In addition to academics, Thomas is also an accomplished athlete. He is on the varsity basketball and baseball teams. He is recognized as an outstanding baseball player and has participated in the FABL All-Star Game, competed in the USABF World Series tournament in San Diego, and the Select Six tournament in Boston. Thomas also won the Northeast Regional World Wood Bat Tournament and played in the Perfect Game Championship in Fort Meyers.
Community and school service are a priority for Thomas. He does extensive pro bono tutoring and is a Winthrop Hospital Volunteer. He holds membership in various clubs and organizations such as EAT, Lo Stivale, the Miracle Club, Key Club, Latin Club, Italian Club and a youth group.
One of the highlights of Michaela Pewarski's resume is her numerous community and school activities. She is an alter server, and a member of the St. Joseph's Youth Group. She participates in Key Club, the Italian Club, Junior Statesman of America, Peer Meditation, Student Court, Locks of Love, and is president of Heart 2 Heart, which benefits underprivileged, disable and sick children.
Michaela has been recognized for many academic accomplishments. She is a member of the National Honor Society, is on the Principal's List, and is listed in Who's Who Among American Students. Michaela has received the Testimonium Meriti Award as the most outstanding Latin I student in Garden City High School, and also achieved Summa Cum Laude and Magna Cum Laude status on the National Latin exam. Some of Michaela's many awards include: the Editor's Choice Award, N.Y. Water Environment Association Award, the World of Escher Award, and a bronze and silver medal at the L.I. Math Fair.
Michaela is an accomplished musician. She plays the Bassoon, piano and tenor sax in the Jazz Band, as well as the Alto sax in the Marching Band. she is a member of the Tri-M Music Honor Society, and participates in NYSSMA. Michaela excels on the playing field a a midfielder on the high school county championship field hockey team, and a forward on the varsity basketball team.
