A Word From The Publisher
It's been a busy week in Garden City. On the front page we feature stories about the debate over assisted living and where it should be sited. Additionally, the Board of Trustees is examining Nassau County Thomas Suozzi's proposed Hub project and its impact on the Village. Of particular concern is the possibility of a transportation link that might be run through the Village.
Over at the School Board, the district is examining security in its buildings, especially the High School, which has an open campus policy.
The final front page story is about the recent Village election and the Volunteer Fire Department's displeasure with a recent action by the Board of Trustees. Several weeks ago the board decided not to participate in a Length of Service Award Program.
Two shorter stories, which on other weeks would have been placed on the front page, are also worthy of mention. They are located on our "jump" page, next to the continuations of the front page stories (page 34).
In one story, the fire department assisted the New Hyde Park Fire Department with a major fire which included exploding propane tanks and 30 foot high flames.
In the other story, Garden City Police Department officers apprehended three suspects who allegedly robbed a woman at gunpoint. A gun was found in the car after it was pulled over for a traffic violation, and we are very very glad the perpetrators did not decide to use it on the officer.
So, while some weeks the news is light, and we have trouble deciding what to put on the front page, this wasn't one of them. All of those stories deserved top billing (not to mention several more articles that ended up on inside pages).
Garden City's a busy place this time of year!
