The Garden City Public Library at 60 - 7th Street, will be having a demonstration and talk on falconry on Thursday, March 30 from 7:30 to 9PM. The meeting is free, and is co-sponsored by the Garden City Bird Sanctuary and the Friends of the Hempstead Plains. Master Falconers Bob Young and Sonny Squiciarino are bringing several of their live birds of prey that are trained in the sport of falconry.

In addition, they are bringing other raptors, illustrating the unique adaptations these predatory birds possess.

Birds used for falconry are not tamed, but are trained to fly free in the wild and either catch their natural prey and\or return to the falconer's hand for a food reward. In many cases, falconry involvesrehabilitating injured birds and teaching them to hunt so they can be releades back into the wild. Harris hawks, from the Southwest, and Peregrine Falcons (the fastest birds in the world) and Red-tailed Hawks, which live in ourt area, make good falconry birds.

Additional information on falconry can be obtained on the LI Falconry Association website, http://www.lifalconry.com.

Bring your camera and plenty of film!! For further information on the Garden City Bird Sanctuary, where a pair of red-tailed hawks have been frequently seen scouting the area for a nest during the past few weeks, contact Rob Alvey at 326-1720.
