Community Club To HostIrish Novelist
The members of The Community Club of Garden City and Hempstead are in for a treat on Wednesday, February 8th at 1:30 p.m. at the Casino. They will spend “An Afternoon with Irish Novelist Tom Phelan.” Born and raised on a farm in the Irish midlands, Mr. Phelan is the author of several acclaimed novels which have been published in four countries and in three languages. He will read from his latest novel “The Canal Bridge” and will talk about Ireland and World War I. A quarter of a million Irish men served in the British army during The Great War and approximately 35,000 were killed. Unfortunately, due to political divisiveness, Ireland has had no tradition of honoring these soldiers and the younger generation is not even aware that their family members participated in the war. One of Mr. Phelan’s aims in writing “The Canal Bridge” was to give these men, many of whom he knew as a child in Ireland, their proper place in the pantheon of Irish heroes. Members and their guests are invited to stay for refreshments after lecture and to chat with the author.
