Visit England Without Leaving GC
Have you ever thought about visiting the beautiful Anglican Cathedrals in England and enjoying a traditional choral service? Well you don't need to leave Garden City to do so. On Sunday, February 5, at 4 p.m. a service of Choral Evensong is being celebrated at the Cathedral of the Incarnation. This same service is sung daily at the great Cathedrals in England. The service consists of prayers, readings from scripture, hymns and texts sung by the choir. Unlike many other services at churches today, most of Evensong is sung by the choir alone, giving the congregation a chance for peaceful meditation and reflection. Evensong provides a quiet end to the weekend, as well as refreshment for the week to come. The service this Sunday will observe the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord in the Temple, which is also known as Candlemas Day. Candles for use throughout the year were traditionally blessed on this Feast. The feast celebrates the day when the infant Jesus was presented in the Temple forty days after his birth and recognized as the Light of the World.
The Cathedral Choirs sing Evensong once or twice a month. The service is sung by the Cathedral Choir of Men and Boys, or the Cathedral Choir of Men and Girls. Modeled after the Cathedral Choirs of England, the Cathedral Boys' Choir and Cathedral Girls' Choir provide children from throughout Long Island the opportunity to be trained musically and sing great sacred music of all ages. The choirmaster at the Cathedral of the Incarnation is Lawrence Tremsky and he is assisted by Parker Kitterman.
