William A. Daly Jr
William A. Daly Jr. , 81, of Charlottesville, VA former longtime resident of Garden City went to be with the Lord on January 9, 2006 in Charlottesville, VA.
Born Nov 9, 1924 in Woodhaven, NY, he was the son of the late William A. Daly and Alice Gill Daly.
Mr. Daly graduated from Garden City High School in 1942 and Bucknell University in 1949. From 1942-45 he served as a Corporal in the US Army Air Corps and was stationed in England.
He was a founding partner in Daly, Goetz and Gallagher, Inc in Garden City, NY. He was honored by the Garden City Chamber of Commerce as Citizen of the Year in 1980 for his many years of community service in Garden City. He was Past President of the Brooklyn Jr. Chamber of Commerce, Mineola-Garden City Rotary, Eastern Property Owners Association of Garden City and Men's Association of Garden City High School. He served as Member of the Board of Directors of the Garden City Chamber of Commerce, Board of Governors of the Cherry Valley Club and member of the Garden City Casino. He served as manager and coach of the Garden City Little League Baseball program for 16 years.
Upon his retirement to Lake Monticello, VA in 1988, he served as President of both the Lake Monticello Resident's Association and Lake Monticello Golf Association. Most recently, Westminster Canterbury of the Blue Ridge in Charlottesville was his residence. Mr. Daly was an avid golfer, sportsman, civic leader and family man.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 58 years, Gloria Patterson Daly of Charlottesville VA; two sons, William A. Daly III and wife Carol of Richmond, VA; Sean M. Daly and wife Ellen of Richmond, VA; one daughter Tara Daly Ranson and husband Jerry of Tega Cay, SC, cousin Nancy Reuter of Hendersonville, NC and son-in law Lawrence A. Linebrink of Ruckersville, VA. Also grandchildren Larry, Matthew, Jenna, Michael, Sean, Christopher, Nicholas and Jonathan, and eight great-grandchildren. His daughter Sharon and grandson Patrick preceded him in death.
A Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated at 10:00 am on Thursday January 12, 2006 at Sts' Peter and Paul Catholic Church Palmyra, Va. Father Alan Lipscomb celebrant.
The family received friends Wednesday evening January 11, from 5 to 7 pm at the Hill and Wood Funeral Home.
The family suggests memorial contributions be made in Mr. Daly's name to the Lake Monticello Rescue Squad 10 Slice Ct. Palmyra, VA 22963.
Patricia Duff Wright
Patricia Duff Wright , 81, died on January 6, 2006 after a brief illness. Predeceased by her loving husband of 54 years, William Allyn Wright, and her brother, Cameron J. Duff, she is survived by her sister, Barbara Duff Twohig, her children, Sandra Wright Kind, Cynthia Wright and William Allyn Wright, Jr., her grandchildren Kristin Kind, Steven Kind, Kevin Kind, and Brian Wright, and many nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Wright was born in New York, NY, on May 8, 1924 to Cameron and Mary Duff. She graduated from Sewanhaka High School, Floral Park, NY and the Katharine Gibbs School, New York, NY. During World War II, she enlisted in the newly-formed US Coast Guard Women's Reserve, also known as the SPARs, and was stationed in Washington, DC. Mrs. Wright and her husband raised their family in Garden City, NY, where they resided for 38 years. As a licensed real estate agent, she worked in the Garden City residential market for a number of years. She was also a licensed insurance agent and assisted in running the family business, William A. Wright, Inc., Floral Park, NY. Mrs. Wright performed volunteer work for Winthrop University Hospital, the Garden City Public Library, and the Garden City Exchange, and was also a member of the Freeport Yacht Club. In 1994, she and her husband moved to the retirement community of Heritage Harbour in Annapolis, MD.
Mrs. Wright will be interred with military honors at Arlington National Cemetery on March 17, 2006 at 2:00 p.m. Memorial donations may be made to Mill Neck Manor School for the Deaf, Frost Mill Road, Mill Neck, NY 11765.
Roberta Stewart Painter
Roberta Stewart Painter of Sandy Beach, Greenport and Founder’s Village, Southhold passed away peacefully on Sunday, December 18th in Loxahatchee, Florida while visiting her daughter. Her husband, Ernest, just recently preceded her in death in July 2005. For 45 years, Bobbie and Ernest were residents of Garden City.
Mrs. Painter was born October 1, 1925 in Brooklyn, New York. She is survived by two daughters, Marilyn (Randy) Raines of Cheshire, Conn. and Barbara (Brian) Morgan of Loxahatchee, Florida, and 5 grandchildren, Robert, David, (Yvonne) Raines and Brianne, Brian and Brendon Morgan.
Arrangements were made by DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Southhold, New York. A funeral service was held Friday, December 30th at the DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Southhold by Reverend George Gaffga. Interment followed at Stirling Cemetery in Greenport.
