Fiber Arts Collection

A Fiber Arts collection created by textile artists Susan Blank and Elaine Glazer will be showcased at the Garden City Public Library for the month of January. View original, hand-made items incorporating beadwork, crochet and knitting. See uniquely designed ornate jewelry, scarves, handbags, sweaters, capelets and collars.

Susan Blank studied Education at NYU and taught elementary school for several years before beginning her investigation of the needle arts. At a gallery in Alexandria, Virginia, Susan won first prize for a necklace made out of clay which was purchased and donated to Barbara Bush in 1989. Her work has been exhibited at the American Craft Museum in Manhattan, the museum of Art & Design, the Hutchins Gallery at CW Post and Islip Art Museum.

Elaine Glazer began knitting at the age of five, which lead to a lifetime of handwork. She taught needle work at Erica Wilson’s Madison Avenue studio, supervised hand-knit production for Sara Sutton Designs, and designed work for Anne Klein Sweater licensees. Several of her knitwear designs have appeared in national knitting magazines.

Funding for exhibits is provided by The Friends of the Garden City Public Library. All exhibits are free and open to the public during regular library hours. Pastels 2006

An art exhibition of pastel paintings by adult student artists will be displayed in the Garden City Public Library’s gallery from January 8-27 . View pastel portraits, landscapes and still-life’s created by local artists studying with award-winning instructor Arleen Rueth Urban,

she has taught classes sponsored by Garden City Adult Education, The Garden City recreation Dept. and The Garden City Community Club. The collection shows off talents of local residents who wanted to learn the unique style of painting a subject’s personality.

Get "Wrapped Up in Reading" by signing your child up for our Winter Reading Club in the Children's Room. Registration begins January 16 at 9:30 AM. This is a special club for children in Kindergarten through Grade 5. It runs from January 16 through February 4. Children will read books to win prizes. This year children who complete the requirements will receive an invitation to a special program on February 4. This Egyptian program will include games, trivia, a craft project and a snack. Three special prizes will be given away. Don't miss this wonderful program!

January 9, 2006 was the first day of registration for storytimes. Registration is ongoing. Remember - DON'T STAND ON LINE - GO ONLINE.

Registration can be done in person at the library, or online through your computer at www.gardencitypl.org. There is NO advantage either way.

Special Needs Children are welcome with an adult.

The winter/Spring schedule is as follows:

Mother Goose Storytime, 18 mths. - 29 mths with a parent or caregiver but no siblings. Sign up for one of the two sessions. Program is thirty minutes.

Session I (August 2003 - July 2004): Thursdays at 10:30am or 11:15am January 26, February 2, 9, 16, March 2

Session II (October 2003-September 2004): Thursdays at 10:30am or 11:15am March 9,16,23,30,April 6

You and Your Toddler Storytime, ages 2 1/2-3 1/2 (born August 2002 - August 2003) with a parent or caregiver but no siblings. Sign up for one session. Program is thirty minutes.

Tuesdays at 10:00AM or 11:00AM January 24 - April 4, except February 21

Little Listeners Storytime, ages 3 - 4 1/2(born December 2000- January 2003) without adults. Sign up for one session. Program is thirty minutes

Wednesdays at 11:00AM January 25 - April 5, except February 22

Thursdays at 1:30PM January 26 - April 6, except February 23

Preschool Storytime, ages 3 1/2- 4 1/2 (born December 2000- July 2002) without adults. Sign up for one session. Program is thirty minutes.

Wednesdays at 10:00 AM or 1:30PM January 25 - April 5, except February 22

Kindergarten Storytime, for children presently enrolled in Kindergarten. Sign up for one session. Program is forty- five minutes.

Thursdays at 3:45PM January 26 - April 6, except February 23

First Grade Storytime, for children presently enrolled in First Grade. Program is forty-five minutes.

New Friends in Books Club, for children presently enrolled in Third Grade. Program is forty-five minutes.

March 25, Vote for the very first 3 Apple Award - A NYS Children's Choice Award! Bring Your Favorite Fiction Book to Discuss 11:00-12:00, Registration Date February 25

Priority for registration and participation is given to children who are Garden City Public Library cardholders.
