Library Calendar Of Events Week of December 2:
Dec. 27, *Tues, 11:00 a.m. Theodore Roosevelt's Birds of Prey program for families. Ages 4-Gr.5 Dec. 29, Thurs., , 3:00 p.m. to 4:15 p.m. Family Movie-The Rescuers Down Under Dec. 28, Wed. 2:00 p.m., Adult Program-The Dickens!with David Houston. No registration-First come.... *Funding for this program has been provided by the Friends of the Garden City Public Library. Chocolate Lovers 101 "Chocolate Lovers 101" will be held at the Garden City Public Library on January 25 at 7 p.m. Learn the basics of melting chocolate and chocolate dipping techniques. All participants will go home with a bakery box filled with a dozen homemade chocolate treats. Registration begins on Wednesday, January 11th and is limited to adult Garden City residents and must be done in person. Medicare Advice Available A counselor, to help explain Medicare Part D, will be at the Library from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. on the following Thursdays: January 5, January 12, January 19 and January 26. The counselor will see interested parties on an appointment basis only. To make an appointment, please call the Administration office at the Library between 9:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m., Monday-Friday. January Clearance Sale One of the chores associated with the holiday season is marking important dates to remember in the new year’s calendar. The Friends of the Library invite you to jot down Saturday, Jan. 14 th on your 2006 calendar. On that date, The Friends will be sponsoring a January “white sale” or, to be exact a clearance sale of adult paperbacks only. For the bargain price of 10¢ or 12 for $1.00, residents may purchase fiction books by their favorite authors such as Nelson DeMille, Danielle Steel, Mary Higgins Clark, John Grisham, Sue Grafton and Nora Roberts as well as sci-fi books, mysteries, romance and classic novels. The sale will be held on the lower level from 9:00 am until 3:00 pm. Intermediate Knitting Workshop For Adults Blue Ribbon winner Marlene Proct, who is certified by the Craft Yarn Council of America will teach an intermediate knitting techniques class to adults on four consecutive Tuesdays; Jan 17, 24, 31 and Feb 7, 2006 at 7PM. Create a fashionable poncho, a "must have" this year! Registration is required and limited to Garden City residents. Participants must have previous knitting experience. Registration will take place on Tuesday, January 3rd, 2006 and must be done in person. Materials required are 20 ounces of worsted weight knitting yarn and a pair of # 9 knitting needles. A Few Changes-Big Results Most people know that in order to lose weight, maintain weight and stay in shape it takes two things: diet and exercise. In this class, participants will learn how to make physical activity a part of their daily routine as well as how to make lasting dietary changes in order to feel great and look great! With the holiday season just around the corner, the Children's Librarians suggest giving the gift of literature. Please stop by and speak to one of the librarians for suggestions and recommendations. On December 17, there will be a morning craft program ("Holiday Origami Ornaments") for Garden City residents in Grades K-5. The program for children in Grades K-2 will be at 10:00 AM and the program for children in Grades 3-5 will be at 11:00 AM. Registration for the programs will began when the library opened on December 10. Save Dec. 27 on your calendar for "Theodore Roosevelt's Birds of Prey", a program for residents, ages 4 through Grade 5, and their families. It is a wonderful educational program for all ages. However, children will not be permitted to touch or handle the birds. On December 29 a family movie, The Rescuers Down Under, will be shown from 3-4:15 PM. This is for Garden City residents, ages 2 1/2 through Grade 5 and their families. Mark Jan. 9, 2006 on your calendars, because that is the first day of registration for storytimes. Remember - DON'T STAND ON LINE - GO ONLINE. Registration can be done in person at the library, or online through your computer at www.gardencitypl.org. There is NO advantage either way. Special Needs Children are welcome with an adult. The winter/Spring schedule is as follows: Mother Goose Storytime, 18 mths. - 29 mths with a parent or caregiver but no siblings. Sign up for one of the two sessions. Program is thirty minutes. What's Up For Young Adults At The Library The Young Adult Services Association, a division of the American Library Association has recently released the 2005 edition of the pamphlet, "The Best of the Best Books for Young Adults: 100 All-Star Choices for Teens". A group of teens and librarians selected these titles for teens from 12-18 years of age. The title, author and a short summary of the plot are given for each book on the list. The list spans a broad range of reading and maturity levels. There are multiple copies of this pamphlet available at he Young Adult desk in the Garden City Public Library. Please stop by and pick one up today for guidance in creating a "holiday wish list" or in choosing a gift for those special teens in your life. What would the holidays be without a chocolate treat? Garden City Young Adults in grades 6-12 are invited to sign up to learn how to mold and decorate chocolates for the December holidays. Registration is going on now. The workshop, taught by Marie Ilardi will be held on Saturday, December 17th at 12 Noon and repeated at 1 PM. The class will run for 45 minutes.
