Percussion Ensemble Performs

High School students performed on stage at the Hip Pickles eventHigh School students performed on stage at the Hip Pickles event On October 27 th, the Hip Pickles percussion ensemble opened to a rousing welcome at the Garden City High School. This program was sponsored by PTA Arts in Education. The Hip Pickles have been the DCA Drum Ensemble World Champions for an unprecedented six years and have performed on Regis and Kathy Lee, 30 Seconds to Fame, News 12 and MTV. The group consists of two very talented musicians. Chet Doboe and Jeremy Fisher, and more than 50 drums and musical instruments derived from cultures around the world.

Their show at Garden City High School opened with a high-energy drum performance that immediately involved the students in their program. They combined African, Cuban and Caribbean songs and chanting with an almost acrobatic performance. The students also recognized songs from the popular group, Santana.

The performers gave the students some insight into their background and how they morphed their skills into an act that has musical and educational value. Chet and Jeremy encouraged their audience to look creatively at the many opportunities they will encounter during their lives and reminded them that “talent plus passion equals success.” Although it was an honor for the school to host this acclaimed group, they told the audience that it was an honor to perform at a high school that was named “Among the Best 100 Communities for Music Education in the United States.”

This was met with an enthusiastic student response and proved to be a fitting end to this exciting program.
