Club To Focus On Abolishing Slavery
Co-founder Arash Bahar. I-Abolish, or the American Anti-Slavery Group (AASG) has a unique historic mission: It is the only human rights organization in the United States dedicated solely to abolishing modern-day slavery worldwide. That mission is also incomparably urgent because contemporary slavery in Africa is a central component of a policy of physical and cultural genocide.
The goal of I-Abolish is to work with The American Anti-Slavery Organization through every available means - building public awareness, leading advocacy campaigns, conducting research, bartering for the freedom of those in chains, empowering survivors to tell their stories and transform heats and minds - to liberate the millions of people trapped in the virtually indescribable and unimaginable degradation and horror of bondage. This high school chapter is planning to have fundraisers, clothing drives and even, perhaps, bring a speaker to discuss the issues of slavery around the world to the high school.
By conservative estimate, 27 million men, women and children currently lead their lives as slaves - more than at any other time in human history - even during the height of the Atlantic Slave Trade. As has been the case from time immemorial slaves are forced under the threat of violence to work for no pay. Twenty-first century slavery takes many forms, the most common being debt bondage, sexual servitude, chattel slavery and the serverest forms of forced labor.
