Garden City Bombers Trounce Farmingdale
On Sunday at St. Paul's, the Garden City Bombers 16 year old travel baseball team defeated Farmingdale by a score of 11-0 in the final fall game of the Federation of Amateur Baseball Leagues. Righty pitcher Matt Barnes started, and was un-hittable, striking out seven batters in the three innings he pitched. The Farmingdale lineup could not handle either his fastball or curveball. The game also marked the return of leadoff man Blake Stranathan who had been sidelined since July with an injury. Farmingdale used three pitchers against Garden City in a game cut short by the run rule. Centerfielder Tom Lapinski continued to play flawless defense. Lapinski, one of seven left handed hitters on the team, hit a bomb for a for bases clearing triple, putting the game out of reach in the third inning. Due to several injuries, including to first baseman Joe Mohen, right fielder Chris Buhse had to be moved to the infield, where he responded, and also contributed two base hits.
This age group team for the Garden City Bombers will have a spring training trip to Orlando at the Doyle Baseball, at a minor league complex in Florida during February. The varsity Bombers will be playing in a 17-18 year league this coming summer when the high school season ends. In early August, the Bombers are planning a week long tourment in Santo Domingo in the Domican Republic. High school players interested in trying out can contact GCBombers@aol.com.
