I hope that you have been enjoying the beautiful weather this past week. It looks as though we finally got Indian Summer and the leaves are doing their best to compete. My final word is to stay at home and peep at our own leaves both there in Garden City and especially on the North Shore. A nice stretch close by is on Nassau Blvd. South from the G.C. line to Hempstead Tpke. - short but very pretty.
The Children’s Medical Fund held their Fund Raising Luncheon and Christmas Boutique plus Card party at the G.C. Casino this past week and you could not have squeezed in another table. Their boutique was a beauty and so were their prizes - all keyed to the Christmas theme. Attending the affair were: Doris Stewart, Madlyne Lynn, Joan Jordan, Jean Fowler, Athena Philippides, and Lucille Tilitz. Joan Jordan was also working at the Jewelry table, Doris Hauswirth worked the Boutique, and Dee De Vries was also at the Treasures table. Florence Dieterich and Mary Heston were among the prize winners, but you will be seeing more about this in another issue of this paper.
Bridge was on the menu the next night at the G.C. Country Club as they held their monthly Dinner/Bridge. There were 28 tables in play that night and the first couple to deal, bid, and make a Small Slam was Grace Kelly and Jackie West in 6 No Trump. Later on in the evening Dick Benack and Al Urban made the Grand Slam in 7 Clubs. Among those attending that night were Irene and John Christe, Nancy and John Pastula, Binnie and Lennie Enrico, Jennie and Bill Pappas, and Arlyn and George Rath . Bridge Chairlady Muriel Urban announced that the next Dinner/Bridge will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 30 th for the month of December. Be sure to make your reservations for this.
Halloween is over and gone, but before the big day Michele and Paul Dryland held their Halloween Costume party for family and friends and some of them came from out of town in order to partake of the festivities. It was fun for the whole block as they could see Ghosts, Witches, Clowns, and other assorted characters going into the house and thereby, they enjoyed the early Halloween too. It’s such a lovely idea with which to start off the holiday and Michele is the one to pull it off.
The Friends of the Adelphi University Library had Ines Losada Powell of the Metropolitan Museum of Art as their speaker on Sunday and they had a wonderful turnout for the program and did very well with their raffle tickets too. Ines spoke on the painter who became known a Fra Angelico and the Metropolitan is hosting the first major exhibition of his work in this country since 1955 until January 29, 2006. Enjoying the program were Noel Burks, Gladys Clemmensen, Cynthia Brown, Joan Kuster, Shirley Jessen, Marilyn O’Brien, and Bernadette Pepin. Many of them were making plans to go into the city to see the show.
I goofed again and I’m sorry. Happy Birthday wishes go to Joan Jordan who celebrates her special day on the 16 th of this month and to Jackie Polon who celebrates hers on the 11 th of Nov. while husband Bill does his celebrating on the 16 th. Dorothy Candiotti will be blowing out the candles on her cake on the 15 th of Nov. and Mary Polak does ditto on the 17 th. Wow, what a group and so close together - they should all celebrate together. May they all have a wonderful day and a great year ahead in which to enjoy both health and happiness.
Happy anniversary wishes go to Sue and Joe Tess who celebrate on the 14 th as do Lynn and LeRoy Boisen and may both couples have many more years of wedded bliss and enjoy them in health and many more years to come.
Catherine and Tony Scolpino take the high honors in Wedding Anniversaries at this time as they celebrate their 50 th Wedding Anniversary at a private mass at St. Joseph’s R.C. Church and then go on to a gala dinner party with family and friends. They are a lovely couple and we all wish them the best in their 50 th year together and also send wishes for many more years to come.
Two of our nicest gentlemen are under the weather at this time and it would help if folks sent them some Get-Well cards. They are Cliff Hauswirth and Bill O’Connell. All our best to you both.
Definitions from the Internet: Polarize : What penguins see with. Avoidable : What a bullfighter tries to do. and Misty : How golfers create divots. If that’s not enough to stop watching the Internet what is?
Have a nice week and see you next Friday.
