On Sunday, November 13th at 4:00 p.m. in Garden City Cathedral of the Incarnation, the Long Island Choral Society will open its 77th Season with a concert featuring five composers’ tributes to Saint Cecilia, the patron saint of music and musicians. These will include Handel’s “Ode for St. Cecilia’s Day.” Scarlotti’s “Saint Cecilia Mass” and compositions by three modern musicians: Benjamin Britten’s “Hymn to St. Cecilia,” Daniel Pinkham’s “Song for St. Cecilia’s Day” and Gerald Finzi’s Opus 30 “For St. Cecilia.”

Soloists performing in these works include Soprano Jessica Tranzillo; Soprano Arlene Travis, Mezzo Soprano Ellen Lang; Tenor Gregory Mercer, and this year’s Artist-in-Residence. Bass-Baritone Donald Barnum. Henry DeVries will accompany the chorus and soloists on the Cathedral’s magnificent organ.

Saint Cecilia was a third century martyr whose feast was celebrated in the Roman Church as early as the fourth century. When the Academy of Music was founded in 1584 in Rome, Cecilia was made patroness of the institute and her veneration as patroness of church music in general became universal. Her feast is celebrated on November 22nd.

Founded in 1929, the Long Island Choral Society is the oldest continuously performing musical group on Long Island. Now in her 27th season as the Society’s conductor, Meredith Elaine Baker is Director of Music at the Catholic Chapel of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. She is a member of the Liturgical Music Commission of the Archdiocese of New York. The Choral Society’s 75-voice chorus is drawn from forty Long Island and New York City communities.
