Sparks Enjoy Successful Weekend

Garden City Sparks (GU10) continued their undefeated season winning both games this past weekend. Bellmore Hot Shots were first up for the Sparks. The Sparks opened the scoring eight minutes into the game but Bellmore came back quickly. With the score tied late in the first half, the Sparks mounted a strong attack to take a 2-1 lead. Although the Sparks continued to pressure Bellmore, the half ended without another goal. The halftime talk must have inspired the girls because they came out flying. Before a blink of an eye, the Sparks scored three quick goals. The team attacking style of play clearly wore down the opposition.

On Sunday, Garden City traveled to Floral Park. Again the Sparks opened the scoring using quick ball movement. Joanna Georgitan started the attack down the right with a quick pass to Sarah Galzerano in the middle. Sarah sent the ball wide left to Katherine Malhame who hammered it into the top left corner of the goal. The second goal was just as skillful. Haley O'Hanlon pushed up from her sweeper role and passed to Sarah. Again Sarah switched the field to Katherine on the left. This time Katherine sent a through ball to Joanna streaking down the right. Joanna hammered a shot but only a magnificent save by the keeper kept it out of the goal. However, the power of the shot was too much to handle and Sarah quickly pounced on the rebound for a 2-0 lead. Although the Sparks dominated play, Floral Park had chances on the counter attack. Only the defensive abilities of Erin Connerly, Haley O'Hanlon, Emma Gallagher, Kaitlin Gorman and Caroline Beaty kept Floral Park from scoring. Late in the game, Ivanka Reksono, Shannon Callahan and Tara DeAngelo continued to pressure Floral Park. The Sparks were once again the better-conditioned team. After numerous corner kicks and shots, Floral Park could not properly clear the ball from the box. Haley O'Hanlon again pushed up from the back, but this time she fired a shot low into the corner for the final goal of the game with about 3 minutes to go. With the 3-0 victory, the Sparks are now 7 wins and 1 tie in 8 league games and have kept four clean sheets due to a great defense and the strong goalkeeping of Kaitlin Gorman, Caroline Beaty and Shannon Callahan. The team's final home game will be this Saturday versus Massapequa.
