Sparks Outshine Lightening
Two weeks ago the Garden City Sparks (GU10) played a tough North Shore Lightening team. The Sparks controlled the game but were unable to score for the majority of the first half. Near the 20 minute mark, Shannon Callahan pushed up from the back and passed to Katherine Malhame who got free down the left. Katherine crossed the ball perfectly through the six-yard box where Ivanka Reksono one touched it into the goal. Text book cross and finish, something Coach Malhame has been working on all season. North Shore did not let down and scored on a beautiful cross and finish two minutes later. Game on! In the second half, the Sparks continued to pressure and shoot but the North Shore goalkeeper was up to the task. Although the Sparks dominated with Sarah Galzerano, Joanna Georgitan, Katherine Malhame, Tara DeAngelo, Ivanka and Shannon firing shot after shot, the post or the keeper kept the game even. North Shore also had their chances on the counter-attack but Haley O'Hanlon, Emma Gallagher, Erin Connelly and Kaitlin Gorman shutdown all attempts on the Sparks second-half keeper Caroline Beatty. As the pressure mounted and time began to slip away Erin Connelly carried the ball upfield from the back and slid a pass through two defenders to Sarah Galzerano who fought off a defender and hammered it into the back of the net with only minutes to go in the game. Ivanka then iced the game with her second goal splitting two defenders and putting the ball into the corner of the goal. The 3-1 victory kept the Garden City Sparks undefeated for the season including all tournament play.
