Garden City Daredevils Win Again
By Victoria Piscopo and Elizabeth Furman(GC Daredevil players)
The Daredevils are all smiles after a big win! Bang! Another goal was brilliantly scored by none other than our talented halfback, Lily Schmitt. Last Saturday, October 29th, the GC Daredevils broke out their under armor, headbands, and gloves to battle the weather and the RVC Challengers in a fifth grade girl's soccer game.
It was a cold and damp October morning as we stepped on to the field in RVC to play an important game against a very good team. We knew it was not going to be easy and it wasn't. The game was pretty evenly played for most of the first half. Our team was playing very well as the attack players, Krista Dampman, Jane Frumberg, and Carly Knowles kept putting pressure on the RVC defense. We knew that if we kept the ball near their goal we would score a goal soon. That is exactly what happened just before halftime. Courtney Studdert, one of our toughest halfbacks brought the ball up the sideline and passed it to Carly Knowles who dribbled the ball toward the corner. When the defense came to guard her, she passed it in front of the goal where Lily Schmitt controlled it and kick a hard shot pass the goalie and into the net. That gave us a 1-0 lead just before the first half ended.
As the second half began, we all started to play even better. Our halfbacks, Erin Greiner, Jackie Jahelka, Courtney Studdert, Lily Schmitt, and me, Victoria Piscopo, really started to control the middle of the field. We kept beating the RVC players to the ball and we kept passing it up to our forwards who kept shooting it on the goal. We took a lot of good shots, but could not score another goal. As it turned out, we did not need any more goals because our defense was awesome. Our goal keeper, Kelsey Tierney, was great as usual. And our defenders playing in front of her were just as good. Brynne Murphy, Taylor Pappas, and me, Elizabeth Furman kept stopping the RVC players every time they got anywhere near our goal. We were not going to give up a goal or our lead.
The final score was GC-1 and RVC-0. We won a close game and now we are still undefeated with only two games left to our season. We have to play Albertson next and then we finish our season against Farmingdale. Wish us luck!!!
We would like to thank all of our teammates for playing such a great game and we would like to thank our parents for coming to cheer for us. We would also like to thank our coaches, Mr. Frumberg, Mr. Studdert, and our skills coach, Lauren, for helping us so much.
