Homecoming 2005
Garden City’s finest! The cold weather and cloudy skies didn’t dampen the Garden City spirit for Homecoming 2005, which was held on October 29.
The day began with a special group of volunteers: Eric and Carol Zimmer, Tony Viglietta, Phil DeMartino, Judy Keenan, Michael and Bernadette Sullivan, Angela Heineman and Sue Sheh, who participated in a cooperative effort between the village and the school district to assist the communities impacted by Katrina. Residents and students donated school supplies to Benjamin Franklin High School in the Orleans Parish. The Garden City High School Student Council, who initiated the collection, reports that 45 boxes were sent to New Orleans.
The homecoming parade was led by the Garden City High School Marching Band and Color Guard. The Village Police and Fire Departments, the Board of Education, Superintendent of Schools and the Men’s Association joined the festivities and marched to the high school, where everyone enjoyed a great barbecue.
The Trojans were victorious over Carey High School with a score of 35-14. High School students selected Michael Dooley as Homecoming King and Joan Persico as Homecoming Queen. The Miracle Club was the winner of the “best float” in the Homecoming Parade and the Spanish Club received second prize. The Chamber of Commerce staged a super street fair that wa enjoyed by residents, alumni, children, parents and grandparents. All in all, it was another great Homecoming, which is in keeping with the Garden City tradition.
