Thunder Maroon 9s Can’t Get Past Uniondale
One step forward, one step back. No this isn’t the Texas Two-step, it’s the way this season has gone for the Thunder Maroon 9s. These kids tried all their moves against a tough Uniondale squad, but could not come away with the victory. Sometimes things just don’t go your way, and that was the story of this game.
Coach Harder summed up the mood best with his post game quote - “The guys played hard, but sometimes the sun shines on the other side of the field.” How true.
That’s no to say this game did not have the share of highlights. most notable was the determination and guts these kids displayed.
For instance:
Luke Zeccola took a hard hit in the first half, but gutted it out.
Richie Mattone lost a tooth, but not his courage.
Matt Greene played with a lacerated foot.
Anthony Preziosi played on an empty stomach.
The first half was a defensive struggle, capped with strip and fumble recovery by Kyle Harder. Cornerback Kevin Mullin added another fumble recovery to stop a Uniondale drive. A revamped defensive line of Alex Umland, Aidan Brown, Joe Creighton and JP Moran (1.0 sacks) pressured the Uniondale offense for most of the day. Bash Bros. Sugrue and Moran forced the Uniondale QB to rush a pass that was intercepted by Ryan Blair.
The Thunder backfield of QB Ryan Blair, backs Mike Keating, and Ryan Guarino got some nice gainers, but could not break free for the big score. Will Harrington, Desmond O’Malley, Jack Kennelly and Jack Anesner made some nice blocks on the offensive line.
Defensive tackle Anthony Zinga was asked if this one hurt - ‘“the Stinga” shot back - ‘Hurt? Hurt? Pain is weakness leaving your body, so bring on the hurt.” Al Davis sign this guy up now.
Fan(s) of the Game: Everyone. Given the cold and windy weather, lots of fans would have headed for the exits to beat the Turnpike traffic. Not this crew. And a special thanks to the Grandparents who come out in force for every game, and are always impeccably dressed.
Coach Blair has to rally the players for the final two weeks of the season. When asked what he would use for inspiration Coach Blair replied - “Ice cream and Sponge Bob. Lots of it.” Motivation comes in many ways.
Our next game is Sunday 11 a.m., October 30, at Stewart field against the Baldwin Bombers. Come on out and cheer these kids.
Go Thunder!
