U-10 Scorpions Shut Out Franklin Square
Michael Catalano skillfully moves past two opponents. After the rained-out Windsor, CT Tournament and last week's mud-canceled game at Carle Place, the Scorpions were dying to get back out on the field on Oct. 22nd and play some serious soccer. Despite the biting wind and cold driz-zle at St. Paul's, they shut out the Franklin Square Arsenal 2-0 as they continue to out-play their opponents this season.
DEFENSE, DEFENSE, DEFENSE! These Scorpions have only allowed 2 goals in the past 4 games, and have won by shut-outs in 2 of them.
In the first half, with GC playing against a 20-mile-an-hour wind, defenders Drew Kiley, Ryan Zarou, Brian Bingham, and Dale Stasco pretty much kept the ball on the forward side of the center line; Stasco was able to bring the ball all the way up for a nice shot at the goal that just missed. Goalie Luke Zeccola skillfully stopped the few balls that came his way.
A versatile Rob Wotczak does a great job in Goal as well as in the midfield.
Mid-fielders Rob Wotczak, Kyle Zarriello, Derek Attardi, and Michael Catalano, along with strikers Danny Simmons and Taylor Ricci, got off many shots on goal, but no scoring.
The Scorpions had the helping wind for the 2nd half. Taylor Ricci got a breakaway and fired a line drive right into the goal. 1-0. In goal, Rob Wotczak saw some action as the Arsenal stepped up their attack; Rob made several outstanding saves.
With hair flying and arms pumping, Taylor Ricci breaks away and scores goal! With only a few minutes left in the game, Danny Simmons gave the Scorpions a cushion, booting one diagonally into the bottom right corner of the goal. 2-0 Scorpions. Time simply ran out for Franklin Square as GC took their winning record to 4 and 1.
Danny Simmons executes a low kick from the corner for a goal. |
