U-10 Demons Defeat Manhasset
Kevin Mullin moving the Demon attack. After being beaten by the Port Washington Real two-weeks ago following a week of heavy rains, the U-10 Garden City Demons were back in action this past weekend against the Manhasset Titans. With three tough opponents on the schedule in the coming weeks, the Demons knew going in to their match that this was a must win game.
On a nasty afternoon at Tully Park, the fired up Demons opened the scoring on a neat give and go from the kickoff as Carney Mahon scored off a feed from Kevin Mullin to put the Demons in front less than one minute into the match. With the wind at their backs, the Titans settled down and began to test the Demon defenses. However, Jack Tigh and Peter Escribano were impenetrable. They, along with Mike Randazzo, Will Harrington, Greg Vouzianas, and Jack Gillan continually frustrated the Titan offense by controlling the midfield and getting the ball up the wings to the Demon strikers. The Demons had several fine scoring chances just miss off wonderful passes as Kevin Mullin and Mark DeSantis nearly tallied from close range on separate opportunities. Later in the first half the Demons threatened again on a textbook passing sequence by Escribano, Mullin and speedster Raymond Leto, who's cross into the box was knocked wide of the target. Manhasset's best first half scoring chance came off a defensive turnover in the closing moments but the Titan striker shot wide while on a breakaway against Matthew Rogers in the Demon net. The Titans would not threaten again.
Mark DeSantis clears the ball out of harms way. The second half began with the Demons enjoying the strong wind along with some deft playmaking by all on the pitch. Matthew Rogers increased the Demon lead to 2-0 off a terrific pass from Carney Mahon who had won a 50/50 ball in midfield. A few minutes later the Demons tallied again off a perfectly executed throw-in by Kevin Mullin to Peter Escribano. Upon receiving the ball, Escribano settled, turned, and fired a low corner shot past the Titan goalkeeper for a 3-0 lead and the offense was not done yet. After forcing a turnover just outside the Titan penalty area, Mike Randazzo raced behind the defense and scored. Moments later Gregory Vouzianas tallied a goal off a nice touch pass from Matthew Rogers.
The Titans continued to press on but again were contained by the fine play of Mark DeSantis and Jack Gillan who denied them by going airborne and knocking the ball away with several nice headers.
Matthew Rogers netted his second goal of the game by maneuvering the ball through several Titan defenders and depositing the ball into the net for a 6-0 advantage. Jack Tigh completed the scoring by converting off a feed by Raymond Leto in front of the Titan goal.
Kudos to the entire team as six different Demon players scored a goal. This was a well earned victory for the boys who displayed terrific one and two touch passing as well as textbook possession of the ball.
The team returns to action this Saturday at home against the first place Levittown Thunder. Let's go Demons!
