Goalbuster Defense on the AttackGoalbuster Defense on the Attack The Goalbusters, a GU-13 travel soccer team traveled to Cold Spring Harbor on Sunday, October 24, 2005 for a match against the CSH Glory. The match began on schedule at 9:30 a.m. The weather was the coldest so far this season but at least it was DRY. The Goalbusters came fired up for their date with the Glory, a team that has been a bit of a nemesis for some time. The Goalbuster defense was awesome in pushing the ball up to their strikers and keeping the Glory offense from penetrating the upper third of the field. The Goalbuster fullbacks made it tough for the Glory to get within scoring range. The fullback line was effective in thwarting offensive attacks by CSH. Barbara Sullivan, Kara Zerille, Christine Codignotto, Katie McCarthy, T Takach , Kate Butcher, and Lauren Engelke protected their goal keeper, Lauren Williams, by eliminating one-on-one shots against her, forcing many shots-on-goal to be taken from the outside. The Goalbuster half backs, Emily Winchurch, Carly Cento, Cate Murphy, Krysta Cento, Elizabeth Mahoney and Mikaela Rix skillfully controlled the middle part of the field, using good communication and cross passes and utilizing the entire field. This kept the CSH halfbacks and forwards confused and at times, out of position. This allowed for offensive attacks against the Glory's keeper, who had her hands full in the first half. The Goalbusters forwards, Maria Sokolovich, Caroline Tarzian and Kelly Reis did their part by taking good shots against the Glory goal keeper.

Goalie Lauren Williams
Goalie Lauren Williams The first goal of the match was set up on a break-away by Kelly Reis on the right side of the field. Kelly took a hard shot-on-goal, forcing the CSH goalie to tip the ball up and over the net, setting up the Goalbusters for a corner kick play. Barbara Sullivan took the kick placing the ball into the center of the goal area. Emily Winchurch was there to take the shot amidst a scramble and scored the first Goalbuster goal of the game. The second goal again involved Kelly Reis. Kelly had a break-away ball and a clear lane to go within scoring range. She took the shot which landed in the net making the score 2-0. The Glory managed to score a goal. with a high lofty shot with minutes left. At the whistle, the Goalbusters were victorious with a 2-1 win over Cold Spring Harbor.

Walt Winchurch During His Victory Lap
Walt Winchurch During His Victory Lap The Goalbusters delighted in seeing their coach, Walt Winchurch, jogging around the field, as promised if they were victorious. Some of the girls grumbled that he didn't run fast enough, but Walt was happy that he actually made the full lap. (Of course, the boys team that was warming up for their game "lapped" him, but we won't say anything.) Assistant coaches Bill Mahoney and Peter Takach joined Walt in congratulating the girls on their victory. Since Pete didn't need his "sign", can assume that the girls played one fantastic match? Congratulations Goalbusters!!
