Fireballs Topple Fireballs
Courtney Chmil first to the ball. On a day when the sun was trying to break through the ominous clouds, the GC Fireballs were trying to solve the defense of the HBC/Farmingdale Fireballs. But they could not come up with the break that would put them on top and suffered a tough 1-0 defeat. Our girls played tough, getting to most loose balls, but did not have the opportunity to get a shot past the HBC keeper.
Playing terrific team defense, the Fireballs were led by sweeper Michelle Rotondo, who once again steadied the backline by continually stepping up to stop the attack and take the ball out of trouble down the sideline. Containing the wings were Paige Vincent, Erin Mullins and Kim Verderber throughout the game. Either it was Erin running down the forwards into the corner, Paige stepping in front of a ball in the air or Kim attacking the ball with speed, the GC Fireballs were able to fend off the attack. Adding to the solid defense are stoppers Christine Malhame, Shannon McWilliams and Adair Alexander. Christine is seemingly always around the ball, whether on offense or defense. The defense and keeper Joanna Matuza have managed to keep the Fireballs in every game.
Megan Zarriello works with Kim Verderber and Christina Cesarini The Fireballs had several terrific opportunities during the match. Creating opportunities off of dead balls as well as making runs through the midfields. As much of the offense does, it usually starts with Christina Cesarini in the center midfield supported by Courtney Chmil, Alex Rooney and Kendall Alexander and finished off with or forwards - Megan Zarriello, Meaghan Walsh, Liz McDougal and Alexa Kentfield. Some of the best opportunities came in the last 5 minutes with a frantic attack by the Fireballs. Cez had a shot go over the bar, Christine had one go just wide and Courtney and Adair had the keeper making good saves. But goal just wouldn't come and GC walked off with a tough 1-0 loss. Better luck with Hewlett on Sunday.
Paige Vincent pounces on another ball.
Michelle Rotondo clears the corner.
