Time Runs Out On The Thunder

Game Day Captains, Mohacsi, Nagel and MatinaGame Day Captains, Mohacsi, Nagel and Matina The nine days of rain stopped and the sun came out for the GC Thunder Team White 8 year olds for their game with the undefeated Mineola Chiefs.

The Thunder were led by game day captains Evan Nagel, Joey Matina, and Andrew Mohacsi, the coin toss was won by the Thunder who elected to receive the ball. The Thunder offensive line rumbled onto the field led by James O'Sullivan, Tim Butler, Nick Gray, and George Petropoulos. Thomas Tubridy at quarterback teamed up with Evan Nagel at center to run the second offensive play of the game to Colin DeAngelo with a power play behind a huge Brian Goepfert block for a 45 yard touch down run. The Thunder crowd roared while Colin sprinted down the field. Nick Bonelli then ran in the extra point behind a critical block from Chris Larkin to put the Thunder ahead. (GC-7 Mineola-0).

Colin Deangelo Touchdown Run Out came the Thunder defense led by Joey Matina, Brendan Digan, Mike"The Fridge" Crapotta, Andrew Mohacsi, Joseph Morreale and Thomas Ilardi to protect the Thunder lead. Matt Thomas and Jay McNamara did a great job of containing the Mineola running backs. Mineola and the Thunder traded possessions three times in the first half. Mineola scored on their last possession of the half but the Thunder's defensive end, Lucas Hildreth stopped a Mineola sweep play for the extra point so the Thunder maintained the lead at the half (GC-7 Mineola-6).

Colin Deangelo Ready to Sack the QB The second half was a defensive battle with Alex Wood wreaking havoc on the Chiefs backfield; he was in on every play, until the Chiefs were able to mount an impressive drive and went ahead 12-7 late in the second half.

The Thunder crowd was deafening cheering the team on, James Sullivan at quarterback mounted an impressive Thunder drive with a 15 yard QB sweep, followed by several short yardage gains. Then it was fourth and six and time was running out on the Thunder, Stephen D'Antonio had been warming up his arm and ran onto the field to run the sweep pass. He completed a 15 yard strike to the Brian "The Moose" Colamussi and gave the Thunder a critical first down putting them on the 10 yard line keeping the drive alive. The Thunder ran a hurry up offense for two additional play but time expired on the Thunder come back. With the final score (GC-7 Mineola-12).

Alex Wood Up the MiddleAlex Wood Up the Middle The team played their hearts out and as they came off the field the players were greeted to a screaming supportive crowd of Thunder parents, grand parents, friends and family. These are very special young men who make significant sacrifices practicing six hours a week to play games on Sunday. The Thunder play their last home game this Sunday, October 23rd at 2pm at Stewart School Field, we look forward to having Nicholas Donner rejoining the team, come out a cheer them on, Go Thunder!
