In November, visitors to the Garden City Public Library can view “Children at Play,” a gallery show of realistic graphite drawings and oil paintings by former Garden City resident Elizabeth Duncombe Nehls. This award-winning artist and retired public school art teacher has been inspired by children learning important life lessons.

For hours and directions call (516) 742-8405 or visit www.nassaulibrary.org/gardencity . The library is located at 60 Seventh St. Installation and removal dates are subject to change.
“With the birth of our first grandchild, I retired from teaching to realize my dream of drawing and painting children and studying classical realism at The Art Student League of New York, “said Nehls. The idea of drawing and painting children has always fascinated me so I began to experiment by drawing my own children. I wanted to capture the fleeting moments in a child’s life. Watching children has taught me important life lessons which are reflected in the titles of my work. For example, ‘Dreaming’ is a wonderful thing because it helps us visualize the life we want to live. My goal is to encourage people to see the ordinary seconds in their own lives as extraordinary and to learn from watching children at play.” The artist’s work is in national and international collections.
Also in November, the library will feature an exhibit from Garvies Point Museum & Preserve. Visitors can view artifacts from the museum’s collection including Long Island Archeology and Geology. Native American tools, lapidary stones and bones. Garvies Point Museum & Preserve is located in Glen Cove with a 72-acre preserve, five miles of nature trails and educational programs.
