The Mustangs are Back in Town
On Sunday October 2, 2005 Garden City U-17 boy's team beat Brentwood 3-2. On a beautiful sunny day the Mustangs hosted the match against LI Copa at St Paul's soccer field. The game started with the Mustangs playing with nine players against the LI Copa's ten players. The midfielders Tim Malon, Dan Lisoski, Sebastian Gomez and Ray Fitzpatrick, used creative passing and skillful dribbling in the game. The steadfast defensive unit Blaise Ancona, Brian Wysocki, Erik Stumpf and the sweeper James Ladner were up for the challenge. Kevin Volpe the keeper had nine spectacular saves and his long punts to the forwards were key in the Mustang's win. Alex Buck the only forward played aggressive and dominated on the field. In the 9th minute the Garden City boys started to spread the field and the quick passes deposited the early lead. Blaise finds Ray who sends a through ball to the forward. Alex splits the defense and rifle a shot past the goalie 1-0. Tim and Sebastian made some pretty crosses that identified some holes in the Brentwood backline. The Mustangs superior ball movement and skillful footwork were evident early. Brentwood reinforcements arrived and they were at full strength after the first ten minutes. LI Copa played tough and constantly attacked the Mustangs defense. Erik and Brian stopped the Brentwood fast breaks with their physical presence. Ray and Dan worked hard to control the midfield. At the half the Mustangs were up by a goal but still playing one man down. Early in the second half James passes to Alex who blasts a shot too hard to handle. Dan follows up the rebound and gives the Mustangs a 2 nil lead. James floats the ball to Alex who quickly returns the ball back. James cracks a shot off the post that the defense clears. Brentwood started a comeback late in the second half. They scored twice and tied the score 2-2. The ref made some questionable calls giving the three yellow cards two to the Mustangs and one to Brentwood. The momentum was shifting to Brentwood. The Garden City's boys were getting tired playing shorthanded for the game. In the eight-fifth minute Kevin came up with a big save. Blaise steals the ball and leads Tim on the right who connects with the Mustang attack. Alex dribbles thru traffic and scored the game winning goal 3-2 final. The Mustangs game strategy was executed with perfection. The coaches Mike Volpe, Joe Ancona, Matt Monte, and John Fodera praised the boys for a job well done. Mustang Pride is back in town.
