Goalbusters celebrate another victoryGoalbusters celebrate another victory The Goalbusters, a GU-13 travel soccer team went up against the Rockville Centre Synergy on Sunday, October 2, 2005. The match was played at Dean Skelos Complex in Rockville Centre.

The referee's whistle blew at noon to start the match. Dean Skelos is a beautiful sports complex, equipped with a turf surface. This surface had the Goalbusters a bit unsure of the way the ball bounced off as it hit the ground, therefore, the Goalbusters got off to a slow start. The Synergy out-shot the Goalbusters in the first 15 minutes of play. Once the Goalbusters got used to the surface, they began to take charge. Not only did the Goalbusters out play the Synergy, they out hustled them as well. The first half ended in a 0-0 tie.

The second half started with the Goalbusters coming out strong, taking early control of the half and never giving it up. The mid-fielders won 50-50 balls and executed accurate passes to the forwards. The defense ran down the Synergy offense, taking scoring opportunities away from them. The Goalbusters only took 13 minutes in the second half to succeed in scoring a goal and teamwork is what made it all happen. The forwards high-pressured the Rockville Centre fullbacks. Forward Maria Sokolovich intercepted a back-pass to the keeper. She then passed the ball to center mid-fielder, Emily Winchurch, who passed the ball to Elizabeth Mahoney. Meanwhile, Maria Sokolovich, pressured the goalie, diverting her attention. This opened up an opportunity to for Elizabeth Mahoney to sneak in with a shot on goal behind the goalie. This was the only goal scored in the match and the game ended in a 1-0 score.

Goal tender Kate Butcher made excellent saves in goal, shutting out the Synergy. Defender Lauren Engelke skillfully assisted Kate on clearing out a shot on goal during the second half. Other members of the defense are credited in keeping Rockville Centre from scoring opportunities. T Takach kept the middle clear in defense, while Kara Zerille stole balls away from Synergy's forwards. Cate Murphy played tough in the outside mid position, running down the opponents on break-a-ways. These are just a few of the highlights of the match, however, the entire team pitched in to aid their cause. The Goalbusters are playing as a unit and are communicating well to each other during the match. Mikaela Rix, Katie McCarthy, Krysta Cento, Caroline Tarzian, Christine Codignotto, Lauren Williams, Carly Cento, Kelly Reis, and Barbara Sullivan completed the effort that led to their victory.

Head Coach Walt Winchurch, together with assistants Bill Mahoney and Pete Takach expressed their approval of a great match played by the girls. Buono Pallone Goalbusters! Now, mangiare tua ziti!
