Fireballs Drop A Tough One
Shannon McWilliams clears the ball.
With a slightly cool breeze and blue skies, the Fireballs came out last Sunday to play in terrific soccer weather. What the girls didn't realize was that a perfect Sunday morning was not so perfect. They had shots hit the cross bar, barely go over the bar or just hit the keeper. And the Fireball offense was only able to capitalize twice. I say only because Commack was able to come up with three for the victory. Falling behind early by two quick Commack goals, the girls faced an uphill battle for most of the game but never once showed any sign of giving up. Within the last five minutes of the first half and then carrying over to the second half, the girls maintained the pressure that ultimately led to a score. The goal was scored at about the 10 minute mark by Liz McDougal and manufactured by the hard work and passing of Christine Malhame, Megan Zarriello and Courtney Chmil. Continuing their charge back, the girls kept the ball deep in the offensive area and had several scoring chances, finally capitalizing on another great corner kick from Christina Cesarini. Cez continually drove the ball across the box on corners, and had this one perfectly headed into the net by Kendall Alexander for the tying goal midway through the half. With the score tied and Commack seemingly on their heels, the Fireballs pushed forward. Unfortunately they were caught by a quick counterattack and long shot by a Commack defender that sailed 30 yards into the back of the net for the deciding goal. In the last five minutes of the match, the girls had several chances but just couldn't get the equalizer. The game ended with the Fireballs on the wrong side of a 3-2 score. The girls come back on Sunday to face another team from Commack, this time away. Good luck girls getting back on track.
