Melanie McHugh dribbles out of dangerMelanie McHugh dribbles out of danger In a hotly contested affair, the Garden City Tigers girls U-10 soccer team scored a gritty 2 - 1 victory over the tough Rockville Centre Blasters. The Tigers gained sole possession of first place in their division with their second road win of the season.

The Tigers got off to a fast start and almost scored early as Kelly O'Donnell had the first chance for the Tigers. However, the Tigers put one on the board on a pretty goal by the offensive spark plug, Tara Walsh. After stealing the ball, Tara lofted a perfectly placed ball over the goalie's head and into the upper right corner of the goal too put the Tigers up. It remained that way until the second half when the Tigers were called for a questionable push in the penalty box and the Blasters scored on the ensuing free kick. The goal was the first allowed by the Tigers this season and tied the game at 1 - 1.

Kelly Punturo on the Move
Kelly Punturo on the Move The Tigers were slowed by ill health, as Tara Walsh and Kathleen Demaria left sick beds to play. Tara scored the winning goal in the second half despite playing one day after having a fever, and Kathleen, along with Emily Schlapp, Melanie McHugh and Lauren Mixon anchored the defense. Kayla Murphy was steady in goal, and gave up only the one goal on the penalty kick. Her save just before the second half ended preserved the win. She was aided not only by her strong defense, but also by the forwards Ali Montgomery, Stacey Madelmayer, Kelly Punturo and Kelly O'Donnell, who controlled midfield and kept the dangerous Blasters on their heels through most of the game.

The Tigers next play at home against Northport on October 1, at home. The coaches again thank all of the family and friends who continue to support the team.
