More than 75 people from Garden City attended the first annual House and Garden Tour sponsored by the Montauk Village Association on Thursday, July 14, and co-chaired by Joan Hildreth of Garden City and Montauk; and Elaine Wingate Conway of Bronxville and Montauk. Most of them traveled on a bus chartered by Michele Paisley of Seventh Street Travel. The group took a scenic trip, passing by many gigantic mansions in the Hamptons, and enjoyed a three-course lunch overlooking the beach at Gurney’s Inn and Spa in Montauk.
Six magnificent homes and gardens in beautiful Montauk were featured on the tour. Two were on the ocean, and one was on a high hill with 180-degree views of the ocean. Also on the tour were a restored Stanford White house on the National Register and a house, near the golf course, constructed from imported stone. In addition, the tour featured a gorgeous garden fronting on Lake Montauk where refreshments were served under a large, old oak tree. After the tour, the group attended a cocktail party at the Montauk home of Joan and Ron Hildreth, along with other friends of the Hildreths.
