Cyclones Finish Strong

The Garden City Cyclones had a sweep of their back-to-back games this weekend to finish the season on a five-game winning streak. Garden City won eight games during the season for the first time in their history however their 24 points were one shy of division winner Freeport, to whom the Cyclones suffered their only loss in the spring.

On Saturday, the Cyclones received a pair of goals from Alison Warren in defeating the Lindenhurst Dragonflys by the score of 2-1 in a rematch of their "miracle game" of two weeks ago. This time Sam Sweeney, who scored the game tying and game winning goals in the previous encounter, was in goal for this match, and she made several keys saves in the win.

On Sunday, the Cyclones enjoyed a balanced attack as four players scored in a wild 4-2 victory over the South Merrick Angels at Kennedy High School. Maggie Raymond, Alexandra Woehr, Alison Warren and Catherine Fischer scored for the Cyclones.

The exceptional team play that was on display this weekend was characteristic of the way this team played all season long. Unselfishness has been a hallmark of the Cyclones since their inception. It not only is a pleasure to watch; it is also effective. As the season progressed, the Cyclones' sense of offensive and defensive tactics continued to blossom. By the end of the year, their communication on the field, good support / cover, strong ball possession and scintillating combination play were all clearly on display. They played a terrific brand of soccer and had great success on the field because of it. Not to be dismissed is that they also had a good deal of fun, for as Grantland Rice noted many years ago, "when the One Great Scorer comes to mark against your name, He writes - not that you won or lost - but how you played the game."
