G.C. Daredevils Win The Waldbaum's Cup Championship
The Garden City Daredevils - 2005 Waldbaum's Cup Champions Top Row: Asst. Coach Nancy Knowles, Head Coach Charlie Frumberg, Jacqueline Jahelka, Lucy Donahue, Kelsey Tierney, Jane Frumberg, Maggie Bill, Brynne Murphy, Courtney Studdert, Asst. Coach John Studdert. Bottom Row: Carly Knowles, Elizabeth Furman, Victoria Piscopo and Taylor Pappas.
The script was written and the Daredevils role was cast. They would play the part as the hard luck runner up in the U10 girls Waldbaum's Cup Championship. They would be credited for playing spirited game but coming up short against a more talented Hicksville team. After all, the Hicksville Extreme was the team that won their division with a convincing 9-0 record. They had the goalie that only gave up one goal all season. They were the team that was supposed to make the Waldbaum's Cup Championship their crowning jewel in a perfect season.
Jacqueline has her eye on the ball and takes it away from Hicksville.
The only problem was the script never made it into the hands or the heads of the Daredevils. They knew if they played their game no team could beat team. They knew they would be the fastest team on the field. They knew no other team had their endurance and that no other had their heart and their will or their desire to win. And, they had the strong lungs of their parents, family and friends urging them on.
Carly beats 4 Hicksville defenders to score the winning goal!
The game started out as the script was written. Ten minutes into the game the Hicksville express scored to take a 1-0 lead. The early celebration had begun. Now all they had to do is what they have been doing all season and that was shut out the opposing team.
The Daredevils had other ideas. They fought and clawed throughout the half for every possession never giving in to the 95 degree heat. With less than 1 minute to play Victoria Piscopo crossed a ball to Carly Knowles who dribbled the ball wide past a defender and then kicked the ball to the far end of the goal to tie the game. The Daredevils and Express went into the half tied at 1-1 but clearly the Daredevils had the momentum and a new script was about to be written.
Bitty races to beat out Hicksville defender as Jane is ready to back her up.
Both teams started the second half with great energy. The Express pressed the ball down into the Daredevils end of the field several times only to be turned back time and time again by the defense. Bitty Furman, Taylor Pappas and Brynne Murphy, as they have done all season long, chased down every break the Express had by stealing the ball or breaking their momentum. On every crossing pass the Express tried, Maggie Bill was there in the middle of the field battling at times two and three Express girls for the ball. She never let up and rarely lost a battle.
Bynne boots the ball downfield.
With the defensive side of the field covered the offense kicked it into high gear. Monumental battles were waged by both teams' halfbacks. Courtney Studdert, Jacqueline Jahelka, Victoria Piscopo, Jane Frumberg and Lucy Donahue fought with every ounce of their energy to win the small battles that would create an edge for the Daredevils. Eventually, their hard work paid off.
Courtney drills a corner kick!
By providing unrelenting pressure the Daredevils won an opportunity for a corner kick. Courtney Studdert drilled the corner kick out in front of the goal where Carly Knowles beat out two defenders to get it. She then made a circle back move that split the defenders and drilled the ball past the Express goalie for what became the winning goal.
With 15 minutes left to play in the blazing heat the girl's courage and will would be tested by the gritty Express team. As time was winding down the Express put together several attacks that required the Daredevils goalie Kelsey Tierney to make exceptional stops. She showed great courage and skill by coming out of the goal to block the shots. She also crushed her punts to force the Express to the other side of the field to defend their goal.
Lucy gets ready to steal the ball.
The new script was now written with an appropriate Hollywood ending. The underdog Daredevils who just started playing together 9 months ago pull it all together as a team to win the Waldbaum's Cup Championship. What a fitting end for a great bunch of girls.
Hooray, hooray for the champion GC Daredevils.
