Well, we asked for it. So many folks were saying that we had such a cool and wet Spring and would it ever get warm. Well, it did and just think, we have a few more days until its really Summer. It came just in time for the Belmont Parade and for the opening of the Garden City Pool. Now, what could be wrong with that? From all reports the Parade went well and had a good crowd of watchers. I’m sure that you will see the winning hats in this issue of the paper. As for myself, I was cooling it off in the Poconos this year and did not get to attend. I did see the race on large screen TV and was happy along with many others that Afleet Alex won. His owners are helping the cause of Pediatric Cancer Research because of a little girl named Alexandra Scott. What a wonderful gesture.
The Casino Ladies Tuesday Lunch/Bridge held their Awards day on Tuesday, June 7th and enjoying the day were:
With Athena
Helen Gentile, June Michele, Dorothy Hedwig (wearing a lovely summer print skirt from India that she got at the Cathedral Fair), Edie Cox, Irene Sweeney, Agnes Rimmels, Rae Salzman, and many others. That’s the end until September. The only fly in the ointment was that part of the A/C was not working, but the ladies (God bless them) opened the windows and doors and all went well.
Speaking of Bridge, the women’s auxiliary of the American Legion has set the date for their Fall Bridge and its Sunday, September 25th from 12:30 to 5 at the Senior Center with a Full Hot Lunch, cards, and Raffle Prizes. I know that you will hear more about this in the future. Joan Nedelka and her group have done an excellent job this past year and we can all look forward to more of the same in the coming year.
Dorothy Alford is back home in Garden City from her vacation in Florida and none too soon as it is the beginning of hurricane season down there. Good to have you and Ed back in town again. You were missed.
That was a mighty pretty hat that you were wearing Joan (Hildreth) for the “Hat’s Off To Summer” sponsored by the Garden City League of Mercy Medical Center. I don’t know if you attended the Belmont Parade or entered the hat contest, but you could have won with your hat at least by my standard.
I also hope that all the organizations in town either attend the President’s Coffee on June 16th at 7th Street Cafe or at least mail in their dates because it does save a lot of trouble. For those who did not attend get them A S A P.
Happy Birthday wishes go to Herb Polak who will be celebrating his special day on the 20th of this month. May he have a wonderful day and many more years in which to celebrate more in health and happiness.
Happy Wedding Anniversary wishes go to Maureen and Cummin Clancy who will mark their 51st on the 19th of June. Much health and happiness to both of you and many more years of wedded bliss.
The very same wishes go to Ellen and Brian Ridgeway who will be celebrating their Wedding Anniversary on the 20th of June. May you have many, many more.
Don’t forget, the Nassau County Coalition Against Domestic Violence will hold their Spring Gala on Wednesday, June 22nd at the Garden City Hotel. For more information or to get chances call Sharon Hoahing at 516-572-0700. I hear that the prizes are fabulous.
It seems that we hear about a number of our favorite people who are passing away lately and I just heard that Father John Davis passed away in Florida about a week ago. He was due to come up to this area in a few weeks and he will be missed by all who knew him. He was the Pastor of St. George’s Church in Hempstead for many years and was also well known in the Cathedral here in Garden City. His wife Bette and son Jed and his family were at his side when he passed away. Father John was known to preach a fine sermon and wasa truly caring man. All who knew him will miss him and he did touch many lives. Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife Bette and his son Jed and the family in their time of loss.
Well, thats it for this week. Guess I can now safely say that I’ll see you at the pool.
